China is a 9 year old, 9 pound Chihuahua who was owner surrendered to us from a not so good situation. We actually drove across town last winter in the freezing dark to rescue her from a crate that had been put outside in a yard. A sheet wrapped around the crate was her only protection against the cold. China is looking for a home with a special person who will let her come around on her terms, and then she will love you forever. Her Foster mom says she has stranger danger...if she doesn't know you she is not going to let you mess with her! She is definitely wary of new people and strange situations and she may handle fear and uncertainty by being nippy, but as she has spent more time with us she is definitely showing more of her sweet side and way less of the snippy one (it's practically non-existent). The good thing about China is that she will relax if you initially leave her alone and don't force interactions. She also can be bribed with treats! Once she relaxes with you she becomes the sweetest girl who just wants to be loved! It takes her about a day to figure out what's going on and then she becomes a different dog who loves to be in your lap and rolls over for tummy rubs. Once China accepts someone and knows them, she is so loving. She wants to be near you, seeks affection, and wants to be in your lap all day long. A new person will have to let her warm up to them in her own way and time. She's a sweetheart once she comes around if someone will give her a chance. She is ok with other dogs, but she does want her foster mom's attention most. She would be happy as an only dog. She walks well on a leash, is house trained and sleeps in a dog bed at night. She is not good with cats or kids and a home with small kids is a no. China needs somebody who is going to understand that it will take a few days for her to know you. Once she does, she will be one of the most lovable dogs you have ever had! China is up to date on shots, and microchipped with a lifetime registration. She is spayed and has had a dental. She is heartworm positive and has started treatment. The treatment involves 30 days of Doxycycline, given twice a day, followed by 12 months of Ivermectin. She will be retested at that time and, if still positive, we will provide another 6 months of Ivermectin and retest at the end of the 6 months. This will continue until she tests negative. The rescue supplies the medicine and pays for the tests until the heartworms are gone! China is a beautiful little girl who really deserves a person who will give her lots of love for the rest of her life!
