Name: Jacob Of Berkeley- In Foster in Rocky Mt, NC Sex: Male Spayed/Neutered: Yes Breed: Shih Tzu (medium coat) Weight: 6.10 lb Height: in 8 Estimated Birthdate: 6/15/2013 Fence Needed: No Location: Pam in Rocky Mount NC Adoption Fee:$299 Date into Rescue: 6/15/2019 Reason for being in rescue: Surrendered to a shelter in rural West Virginia Special Needs: none noted What kind of home would be best for me: Jacob needs a quiet home, maybe with one or two other small, low-key dogs in the home. His ideal owner must be patient and willing to show him it's okay to be loved on. As it stands, he will allow you to pick him up, but he just sits there in your lap and trembles for a while until he warms up to you. The amount of time it takes for him to warm up will vary for each person. He is improving everyday. He needs a home with an owner experienced with helping a very shy dog out of his or her shell. What is my personality like: Jacob is a very shy and slow to warm up to you. He doesn't fear bite, but he will dance around you in a room to keep his distance, or freeze up. He runs to the safety of his, or any open crate, when he's nervous. When he's with his siblings, he is a little bolder. With his regular caregivers, he will come right up to them and vie for their attention, as long as he has his sibling backup. On his own, he is far less willing to beg for attention. We haven't seen him play with any toys aside from some brief interest in a stuffed cow, but he will take treats. He prefers the soft ones, and takes them gently. Jacob dances for his food by sitting up and putting his front paws together and waving them quickly. He eats rather quickly, but not so quickly he throws it all back up. He doesn't have any issues with other dogs. In fact, he seems more comfortable with other dogs present, so long as they are calm. We have never heard him bark or growl for any reason, though we expect this to change slightly once he gains some confidence. He doesn't resource guard, and seems fine with dogs walking by his area. He does not walk well on a lead yet, he's a bit too frightened still. Once he warms up a little, that may change. In spite of his fear level, Jacob does seem to like to snuggle, once he is comfortable with an individual, at least for a little while. In a vehicle, he mainly just sits there and trembles, then once he gets his bearings, there is a little bit of exploring the seat and surrounding area to be done. He does get excited to see us when we come into his area when he's with his brothers. How do I act when I first meet new people: At first Jacob will be very shy, and standoffish. Alone, he prefers to run and play keep away until he can get into his crate. If he is with his brothers, then he will come up and investigate much quicker. As long as they are patient and have many snacks, he should warm up to just about anyone. House trained: Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. He does mark, but that is an easily remedied behavior using belly bands, which we would be happy to explain. Tips and Tidbits: Jacob has dental disease grade II, with some teeth loose, and a few missing. Regular dental care will help this. Ceruminous exudate was found in the ears, and he had an open wound on his left lateral knee, most likely a ruptured cyst. The remnants of a 3/4 inch cyst was removed and the wound was closed up on 06/18/19. Distemper/Parvo was given on 06/14/19, and he received his Bordetella on 06/15/19. On 06/18/19 he was also given a HW test (neg). The shelter told us he was 1, but we and our vet disagree. We think he is about 6 years old, but the paperwork will say 1.
