BRANDO was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. BRANDO is neutered, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. He has an estimated date of birth of 26 March 2016 and weighs around 43.90 pounds. He has been listed as a German Shepherd / Husky mix. We have no way of knowing the exact breed, so it is up to individuals to decide what breed they think is most likely. He does have a thick long-haired coat and so he will be high maintenance when it comes to the upkeep of his coat, needing regular brushing to prevent painful mats. BRANDO when arrived at the rescue was extremely fearful and for the first two days as soon as he saw me he would either run out into his outdoor run, or try and hide under his elevated bed (only managing to get his head under). He has clearly had little socialization and most likely been in abusive surroundings. He would let me go up to him and stroke and pet him, but he was very tense. After a few days, I brought him over to the shop part of the rescue where all the pups are and many other rescue dogs, they are not in kennels and have the shop and a large fenced in area out the back to come and go as they please. I did this so he could be around other dogs and start to relax more, to let him see the other dogs interact with me and for him to build confidence and trust in his own time, whilst being around lots of dogs so he can be a dog. Within a day he has started to run around and play with the other dogs and when he sees me, he will come running up, he won't come right up to me just yet, but I don't push it, I encourage him for a little while and then leave him to do his own thing. I feel it is important for dogs to be able to decompress and build trust at their own pace. He is great with the other dogs and enjoys the company and playing with the pups, of which there are 15 x 3 month old pups, so you can imagine he is getting lots of puppy fun in, which just verifies his gentle nature and personality. BRANDO does use the dog door to go out to do his business or enjoy the fresh air in her run. I do not know if he would let you know he needs to go out since he has 24/7 access to the outside, but he is extremely smart and do not think it would take long to learn. He needs an active family, I have only seen him for a few minutes with children, but his demeanor and personality I have no doubt that he would be great with them and a lot of fun too. As with all rescue's he needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with him themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. %BD'%BD%BDHe is a very sweet, gentle boy who would make a wonderful family dog if given time to adapt and learn to trust. He is very gentle and takes treats gently and he is getting to be an all round happy boy. I think within a family home, he will adjust a lot quicker as he will be getting lots more human attention and will be part of a family. He will just need a patient and understanding family that will let him take things at his pace and understand that new things will most likely be scary for him, until he has gained his own self-confidence, which could take a long time, or never quite happen. We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks. BRANDO is available for adoption for an adoption fee of $550. Canadian adopters need to know that customs charge 15% taxes when entering into Canada. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious soul a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 2-4 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements. Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks. http://www.giveadogahome-sanantoni
