Take a look at this handsome little guy! His name is Buttons. He is an 8 year old, 8 pound Yorkie who is pretty independent. He is up to date on all his shots, microchipped and is Heart Worm negative. He was owner surrendered with 3 other dogs and we have the impression that he was not used to much human contact in his former life because he is proving slow to trust and bond at first. While it is clear he wants to be close by, he will tend to settle just on the edges of company where he is close but not too close. He will need some time to adapt to being around new people but once he begins to settle, he will approach seeking contact by getting up on his hind legs as if to ask you to pick him up. He likes to be petted and can be affectionate but it has to be on his own terms as he is still a bit skittish and will shy away from being touched if not ready. We can see that he so wants to be able to trust and feel that given a little time and space, love and patience, he will reward you with that trust. He is working on his potty skills but has a ways to go. We are confident that with a solid routine and regular trips outside he will improve. Buttons loves to run around but because he is skittish he needs a fenced in yard. He is used to being around other dogs and will need to be in a home with at least one other dog. He doesn't know how to play with toys yet. He has not been tested with children or cats. He can be startled by unfamiliar sounds, like sudden loud noises or strange sounds like Velcro, so it is important to be aware of what is going on around him for the first few days until he becomes accustomed to his new surroundings. He isn't ready to be a lap dog or snuggle in bed with his human yet and prefers to sleep in his kennel at night where he feels safe. He does not know how to walk on leash and will need a few days to get used to the feel of one before attempting to take him out. Is your heart big enough to give him whatever he needs to win his love and trust and be his furever human?
