About Teddy

Adoption Fee: $495
Poodle / Cavalier
Age: Young Puppy
Sex: Male

Teddy is a 5 month old Cavapoo and so is very low to non shedding. His parents were likely a tri-color cavalier king charles spaniel and a black miniature poodle. He was born on Halloween. We rescued him and his brother, Cooper, last week from a pet store in a high crime area where he had been kept in a cage for the last 3 months without ever being taken out to play, feeling the grass under his paws, or the sun on his sweet little face. Other cages were stacked on top of his and the place was smelly and extremely noisy. His coat was overgrown, matted and his feet covered in urine. He had little to no hope of getting a good home. Teddy has been professionally groomed and has been to the vet (where he was very well behaved) and has received all of his shots. The only thing that he needs now is to find a fantastic home. He is currently about 13 pounds (perfect size for cuddling) and the vet says that he will not get much bigger. He will need to be professionally groomed every 4 to 6 weeks and brushed regularly so that his long coat does not get matted and painful. Teddy has enthusiastically embraced playing with toys and loves to romp in the backyard. He loves balls and likes to walk around with a ball in his mouth so his brother and our dog can't steal it. Teddy is amazingly confident and outgoing given where he came from. He learned to climb stairs all on his own after watching our dog do it just a few times. He was weak when he first came home with us but his strength and vigor have greatly improved and he is, amazingly, a normal, bouncy, happy, loving puppy now. His favorite thing to do is to snuggle on the couch beside you or to be held. He also loves to play with another small dog. He is very respectful of our senior dog. Like any puppy, he can be a stinker and has a lot of energy so he will need puppy classes or a trainer and an experienced owner to teach him the rules in a positive way so that he can be a successful member of his new family. I would definitely say he is no worse and probably better behaved than your average puppy of this age. He adapts quickly to new things and is learning a lot from our dog. He makes it through the night (8 hours) without soiling his playpen (which is pretty great for a week) and walks quite well on the leash! He does not bark much and is friendly with strangers. He will need further potty training in his new home. We will only accept an excellent home for Teddy and there will be a vet reference and two references from friends required. Cavapoos are very smart and like to keep busy. They also like to be with their people and follow them around so do not do well being put in a crate for hours. Given where he has lived the last three months, keeping him in a crate for hours would be cruel. A pupppy playpen with an open top would be much better when you are away. Teddy would like a home where an adult is home with him some during the day, such as a stay at home parent or someone who often works from home. He would do well with another small, friendly dog or, since Cavapoos have a low prey drive, may do well with a dog-friendly cat. Residents of Northern VA (preferably Loudoun or Fairfax County) and some parts of MD are preferred to adopt Teddy but exceptions may be made. He is a wonderful little guy and deserves a wonderful home.
