He was surrendered when one of his owners passed away and he could no longer be cared for appropriately. A few months ago, a nice couple adopted Franklin. Overall, he is a joy to have in the house. He stays off the furniture and loves pet beds. He has liked everyone he has met including strangers and visitors to the home. He loves car rides and knows what R-I-D-E means. He walks well on leash and enjoys being active and out and about in the community. He takes treats gently and is housetrained and trustworthy to be in the house alone without having to be contained or crated. Franklin loves to play fetch and will bring the tennis ball back like a pro. He is a fantastic little companion. He enjoys a fenced yard and is very quiet in the home. Franklin has had no issues at the vet's office or at the groomers. He is even just fine in thunderstorms as long has he is inside with his people. Franklin has even met other dogs on leash and in passing at various appointments and is gentle and begins to play. We are unsure how he does with cats. However, with full disclosure we want to talk about the couple of issues Franklin has displayed in home which concerns the owners and feel he would be a better fit elsewhere. The first issue happened when Franklin vomitted and his owner went to reach down and clean it up. She didn't recognize that Franklin was guarding his vomit and Franklin bit her on the hand. It did not require any medical attention. Franklin will also get this way when he has very special chew bones. The owners know to just leave him alone when he has a special item and can recognize when he seems to be guarding something. He is NOT this way with his regular food. He also takes treats gently. This is a resource guarding behavior that seems to be easily managed now that it is recognized. The second issue happened when the furnace repair man showed up at the door. In the excitement of a stranger walking in, and in an effort to avoid Franklin from exiting the open door and jumping on a new person, the owner reached for his collar. In a quick twist, his hand became caught and Franklin began choking and further thrashed around. This incident resulted in the owner having a bite to his hand that did require medical attention. Franklin was immediately 'sorry' and calmed down as soon as he was untangled. Franklin otherwise has no issues with being leashed or a collar being put on or being taken off. This could very well have been a freak accident that was unpredictable and unavoidable. Franklin is neutered, up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, and microchipped. If you are interested in Franklin or know a Wheaten Rescue who may be, please send us a message at [email protected]. If you are interested in meeting Franklin, please complete an adoption application on our website at www.pawswapofgreaterlafayette.com/adopting. His adoption fee is $200. The adoption application is the first and required step of the adoption process.
