Shelly is a 4 year-old, petite, tri-color female. She found her way into rescue when she was picked up as a stray near Dallas, TX. Shelly was pregnant when she was rescued, and she gave birth to 5 healthy pups who have been weaned and adopted into loving homes. Shelly is now looking for the right family to meet her needs. Shelly is very timid around people and in unfamiliar situations. It is clear that she did not get the proper socialization when she was younger. She is quiet, shy and very submissive with both people and other dogs. When Shelly was first rescued, she would cower and try to hide when approached by anyone. After several months in foster care, Shelly is learning to enjoy the company of people and is starting to trust humans. Shelly will need a family that is able to keep her secure since she is an escape risk. If she is allowed to run free, she will hide and be difficult to catch. She will also need an adjustment period of 2-3 weeks in her new home as she learns to trust her family. Shelly will not be comfortable around small children and needs a routine and predictable environment. Once she has gained confidence in a new home, Shelly enjoys being close to people and being safe inside her home. Shelly is confident and friendly with other dogs and also with cats. She must go to a home with other dogs, in order to help her transition and feel more at ease in a new environment. Shelly is house-trained and crate-trained and she enjoys the security of her crate. She is very quiet, although she is starting to bark when a stranger enters the home, or when something alarms her. Shelly has learned that beds and couches are the best places in the house, so she will need to go to a home where furniture privileges are allowed. She prefers to sleep near her trusted person. Although Shelly is making great strides in her social skills, her new family should be prepared to accept that she will probably always be timid and reluctant to try new things. She will thrive in an environment that is safe and secure and provides a consistent routine. Shelly will probably benefit from a family that is able to patiently work on her leash-walking skills since this is a new concept for her. Shelly likes to explore the yard and play with toys, but relies on the security of being able to go back inside the house when she feels insecure. Her favorite activity is to relax on the couch and watch TV or read a book with her people. Because of Shelly's special needs, we would prefer to place her in a home located less than 250 miles from Austin, TX where she is being fostered in order to avoid a stressful transport and so her foster family can assist in her transition to an adoptive home.
