About Ruger

Adoption Fee: $100
Doberman Pinscher
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

This is Ruger. He is a 6 y/o, 95lb, neutered male, Doberman. I rescued him in Sept 2016 because he was living in a camper with no yard. He was not neutered, not current on vaccines, and heartworm positive. I have neutered him, updated his vaccines, microchipped him, he's current on flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and now heartworm negative! I am a registered veterinary technician at a clinic in Rome, GA, so Ruger's health has been a major priority. We have made Ruger work in our home with rotating to keep him away from the cats especially. Unfortunately Ruger is not working out with my other dogs, specifically my German Shepherd. Ideally, he needs to go to someone with no other dogs or cats. The previous owner said he was great with kids, but I have not tested that. The previous owners also used the crate as punishment, so he was not super excited about going into a crate. He is now fully crate trained because we have turned it into a positive experience. He will do most anything if there is food involved. He knows how to sit, lay down, stay, shake, and come. He is a VERY smart dog and very food motivated. He does well on a leash, he loves car rides, and he is house trained.%A0I need to find someone who is specifically seeking a Doberman and knows the breed, not just someone looking for a dog. I've noticed Ruger's behavior changes with dominant, male dogs. I do also need to mention Ruger has shown aggression to My husband and me a couple of times when he first came to live with us. It's been our fault because we've asked him to do something like go to another room and Ruger tests authority. He will growl and show teeth. I think he would bite if you tried to touch him at that point. With all of the above said, I've been working with him. He's extremely food motivated and will do anything for food. He's super smart, sometimes too smart for his own good. As long as treats are involved, you have nothing to worry about. For example, we fed him treats the entire time of his heartworm injections and he never flinched. He's just stubborn sometimes.
