About Apollo

Adoption Fee: $350.00
Jack Russell / Miniature Pinscher
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Our cutie, Apollo, is quite an adorable character, with a comical Jimmy Durante-esque profile! He came to us, with his entire family: four generations of Jack Russell Terrier/Miniature Pinscher mixes, as part of an 'informal' breeding operation. Apollo's owners dumped this beleaguered and neglected family into NYC ACC, where they created quite a wave of sympathy. They joined us in December for a little R&R and nutritional rehabilitation before adoption. It's a shocker that a swell fella like Apollo should wind up homeless before his first birthday. But now, he has lucked up, and he is poised at the beginning of a grand new life adventure. At first meeting, we were shocked by his malnourished appearance caused by severe neglect and poor diet. We noticed quite a bit of staining on his white coat, and his fur seemed so dry and porous, that simple bathing was not enough to improve his appearance. His coat has cleared up quite a bit, but adopters will need to continue his nutritional program of quality protein and omega fats. Apollo and his siblings are Jack Russell Terrier/Miniature Pinscher mixes, which combines two hardwired working breeds with respectable prey drives. Apollo's facial features are delicate, and favor Min Pin DNA, but he has the classic body shape and floppy ear tips that characterized the Jack Russell Terrier. Apollo is a pint sized, sturdy dog at 10 pounds. His short, smooth coat is mostly white, with strategically placed patches of black and carmel brown. Apollo is a high-energy older puppy, whose upbringing has been rather loosey-goosey. He would benefit from an adopter with expertise in raising puppies and who can offer an active lifestyle and basic obedience. Apollo is quite gentlemanly and well-mannered for a JRT. He doesn't have the over-the-top frantic energy that we see in some of his compatriots. Instead, Apollo approaches cautiously, and waits for an invitation to snuggle in his person's lap. He is an affectionate boy, who bonds quickly, once he trusts. Apollo would be a great choice for an active single or couple who enjoy an energetic Terrier type dog. He would be an enthusiastic companion on walks or hikes, and he loves to travel, and be part of the action. Apollo could also join an active family with older kids, as long as everyone can commit to his training and exercise schedule. The key to Apollo is adequate exercise and mental stimulation to keep him from wallowing in the boredom and frustration that leads to behavior problems. Apollo is a social boy, and could easily join a home with other well trained, energetic dogs. We have not exposed him to cats, but the terrier-cat vibe is a well known dicey commodity, although Apollo is more likely than most to coexist well in a feline home. He has begun to grasp the basics of leadership and obedience work, and has passed a few of the Canine Good Citizen tests. Apollo has the potential to excel in this program. Apollo is in good health, but needs focus on good diet and nutrition going forward. He has been neutered, and treated for intestinal parasites. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza and coronavirus). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
