We all know how we get that awww feeling when we see an adorable and very sweet dog who is in need. Dixie is the kind of baby who snuggles in, loves you up and then puts her head on your shoulder. She's so sweet (while being initially just a bit shy) and truly kind with every possibility open to her. That's the case unless a dog like Dixie is in a home that can no longer care for her or on the streets hiding in the shadows with the only feasible outcome being getting turned into a high-kill shelter. We're so grateful for the efforts of our great rescuer in New Mexico for saving Dixie from possible abuse and certain euthanasia. She could see that her temperament was so sweet and her need so great that she couldn't turn her back on this very special girl. Dixie was immediately brought to be vetted, given the appropriate vaccinations, granted an interstate health certificate and brought to a dog-loving foster home to begin her education as a cherished best friend. When we think of rescue, our thoughts don't usually go to the many, many dogs that aren't in shelters, but unwanted and therefore not getting the respect and care that they so deserve. These forgotten dogs that have fallen through the cracks (but have great temperaments) deserve our help every bit as much as their shelter counterparts. They all have been used in one way or the other for opportunistic purposes...to breed and discard or to sell as a puppy to a mill for financial gain. This was the life waiting for Dixie..at just about 4 - 4.5 years, she is such a perfect age - old enough to have left babyish behaviors behind and young enough to many, many active and healthy years ahead. Dixie weighs 9 lbs...this is such a great size to be able to accompany her family just about anywhere a small dog is welcome and then fit perfectly onto a loving lap. Dixie will always fit right in due to her great temperament. She is already starting to understand that sweet, cuddly and cooperative behavior makes great things happen in life. Dixie was one of the extremely lucky dogs to show her sweet personality and potential to be a great family member...and was therefore tagged for rescue. We all had a clear picture of this very sweet and loyal girl in a forever Colorado home with a family that cherishes her for life. As Dixie becomes comfortable in her new home, she will grow into a fuzzy ball of good-will that loves to please - the happier her family is with her behavior, the more she will shine with her accomplishments. We would like to see Dixie in a home that includes her in family time and activities (and of course some lap or couch-time would be perfect!)...and takes that extra step to socialize Dixie with positive reinforcement. This effort takes a very smart dog like Dixie and teaches them the skills to fit into many situations out in the world...and therefore they can accompany their family anywhere a small and sweet dog is welcome. Dixie would be a wonderful companion for active retirees who have the time and desire to be best friends with a truly adorable young pup. Dixie would enjoy another gentle dog to play with (she'd be thrilled to spend her time with a like-sized canine friend) but if her family is very present and provides exercise as well as mental stimulation, she'll be very fulfilled and a loyal best friend. Dixie appears to be a non-shedding (or lightly shedding girl..it's difficult to tell until her sad hair grows out). With a commitment to periodic grooming and great nutrition (a salmon oil supplement would be great) Dixie will grow in a cottony-soft, shining coat that will speak of her breed mix. We've requested that Dixie be spayed prior to her transport to Colorado. We're hoping that this will occur. If it doesn't.. Farfel's is happy to cover all costs for Dixie's spay and microchip if our Denver vet is used. Dixie will be arriving on transport in Denver in early January...we'll update the exact day when information is finalized. Applications are currently being accepted for this sweet and devoted best friend and can be found at http://farfelsrescue.com/adoption/. If interested, please fill out and return to [email protected] or fax to 303-443-7730. If you're truly interested in adopting Dixie, please be sure to fill out our adoption application. It's the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving girl. We're sorry, but in most circumstances, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit an adoption application. Thanks so much for choosing rescue.
