Meet Irma's Gracie! Gracie is a beautiful, approximately four year old, 48 pound, Border Collie Mix. Since arrival to her new temporary home, she has been a bit on the shy side, although she warms up quickly to her sweet, playful self. She loved the people she met, even the kids, and warmed up quickly. She has tested Heartworm Positive & will be receiving treatment prior to her adoption. If you are interested in adopting Gracie, please apply today! OPH partnered with Old Town Pet Resort and Arlington Animal Hospital to assist 21 dogs who found themselves in the path of superstorm Hurricane Irma. Through the generosity of these two organizations, we were able to bring in these dogs and ensure they were out of harms way! Old Towne Pet Resort in Springfield graciously created a seamless transition for these pups from the shelter to their resort where the dogs are being cared for, evaluated, nurtured and prepared for their forever homes. Arlington Animal Hospital evaluated each and every dog and provided preventatives and medical attention for all noted ailments. OPH truly believes that 'It Takes a Village' to make a difference in the lives of shelter dogs. Through this Project Hurricane initiative, we have seen the best of our local business partners and could not be more proud to partner with them! This dog tested positive for heartworm disease before arriving to the rescue. Heartworm disease is transmitted to a dog through a bite from an infected mosquito producing a positive test in six months. OPH will treat the dog and provide two weeks of recovery time prior to adoption. Potential adopters will receive detailed information on the disease and their role in completing the recovery process from OPH's heartworm coordinator. With monthly preventatives, the disease is completely preventable. Read more about heartworm disease here here
