UPDATE ON JAKE AS OF 3/5/17: Some of you may remember Jake's story from November. This boy is 11 - he is HW positive and not strong enough for heavy treatment. He has lived his entire life tied up in a filthy dirty location with only a falling down shed for shelter and tied up on a chain. He had the chain on for... so many years that he had open raw sores around his neck. Additionally he was so thin you could count all of his ribs. We have never been able to find the right foster for Jake so he is living with us at the shelter. He has come a LONG way since November. Living in the shelter isn't the idea life for him but it is a whole lot better than what he came out of. He has gained the weight he needed. We are doing slow HW treatment - which won't solve the problem but hopefully keep it from getting worse. He will never be adoptable. He is not neutered and with his heartworm that makes his outlook for life not perfect but he is loved here at the shelter, he gets attention from the staff regularly, he has good food and gets all of his needs tended to. He has become an overall healthy dog with the exception of his heartworm. He has a couple of quirks - he is not a fan of young children - they want to hug him and he goes NUTS when you do that. He doesn't like having his neck scratched or rubbed - that would be from 11 long years living on a chain. He will bite if you hug him or rub his neck the wrong way. He is NOT good with strangers. He takes a while to warm up. He is amazing with all of the volunteers around here that have spent the time to get to know him slowly. We have not given up on finding him a foster home to live out the balance of his senior years. We know he gets along with female dogs but not when it comes to food - he does protect that and we know that is because for 11 years he never got what was needed. He has done amazing with housebreaking and has not had any accidents in his kennel in about 3 months. We are very proud of the progress Jake has made. The upper left picture is when he came to us - the other two are now. A big thanks to those who have occasionally sent us a check to help pay for Jakes good senior food - it has been a tremendous help. Keep Jake in your thoughts and prayers.
