Meet Barley - A Loving Dog in Need of the Right Home This is one of the hardest things I've ever had to write, because I love Barley with all my heart. I rescued him from a shelter in Tennessee back in 2019 with a former partner. He's a coonhound mix with a beautiful, goofy personality and a heart full of love. But like many rescues, Barley came from a difficult start and has some behavioral challenges that require ongoing support. Barley struggles with resource guarding, especially around food and high-value items like toys. I invested in professional training with a behaviorist in Chattanooga ($900) which helped significantly. I've also explored CBD oil and ruled out any underlying medical causes for his behavior. He's made great progress, but he still needs someone experienced and patient to continue his growth. Due to a complicated situation after a breakup, I was only able to take one of our dogs - who is now a senior with cognitive decline. Our vet (Appalachian Animal Hospital in Weaverville) has strongly advised that Barley not live with other dogs or in our current setup, especially since I don't have a fenced yard - something Barley really needs. Recently, I received a heartbreaking message from my ex's mother, who currently has Barley. She said she plans to euthanize him if I don't take him, due to his resource guarding and tension with the other dogs in her home. I can't let that happen, which is why I'm urgently looking to rehome him with someone who can provide what he needs. About Barley: Breed: Coonhound mix Age: Rescued in 2019 (around 7 years old now) Personality: Silly, loyal, affectionate, full of character Needs: A dog-free home, fenced yard, active lifestyle, and someone with experience or willingness to work with a dog with behavioral needs Training: Has completed training with a certified behaviorist, walks somewhat well on a leash (especially with a head halter) Behavior: Has a documented bite history due to resource guarding - full context can be provided Barley is not a 'bad dog' - he's a dog who needs the right environment. Somewhere calm, consistent, and without competition from other animals. He thrives with structure, positive reinforcement, and exercise. He's so full of life and charm, and I know in the right home, he can truly shine. If you think you could be that home - or know someone who might be - please reach out. I am more than willing to talk in detail about his history, his progress, and his needs. I just want Barley to have the best chance at a happy, stable life.
