About Rollo

Lab mix
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

Meet Rollo !! **UPDATED** This beautiful boy came to us from a shelter. Poor guy was in rough shape and likely had a hard life but despite that he is so willing to love. We just love this guy. Rollo is an approx. 2 year old male. He's a yellow lab mix and weighs approx 54 pounds. He's already neutered, microchipped and updated on vaccines. He is heartworm negative and on preventatives. He was Lyme positive and has already started the medication needed for that. Usually we do a more detailed post on all the dogs basic behaviors but Rollo has one quirk that we want to focus on. Below is a short bit about his training. He is really one of the easiest most obedient dogs we have had around in a long time. Rollo is: Great in the crate Great in the car (jumps in and out when asked and silent) Great about potty training Great with other dogs Great with cats No issues sharing food, treats or toys with other dogs or humans Moderate energy level, playful but likes to cuddle Food motivated and easy to train Has not been destructive in the home Overall he is a well trained, sweet and happy boy. Unfortunately, Rollo may have some trauma from his past. He was recently put into a few situations very quickly after arriving to his foster home that he did not do well with. To be fair to him he was not given any time to decompress or settle in prior to these things happening but he is telling us he is afraid and we want to set him up for success. Although he really does love kids he seems to also have a fear of some kid behaviors. Examples; He was taken to the bus stop by the foster family a few days after arriving and a kid he did not know approached him rapidly. He growled. The child then still proceeded to try and pet him and he air snapped at the child. Another example is when the fosters child went over and tried to pet him when he was sleeping on the couch and he snapped at the child. We know both of these incidents were likely caused by fear. We know that its not a good idea to reach for a strange dog or startle a sleeping dog but the bottom line is kids just don't understand these things. While Rollo adores the kids he was staying with some of their behaviors may lead him to snap at them. We hate to say no kids for him but we do think in order to protect him that is going to be necessary. If a dog is put into enough situations where he is uncomfortable something is going to happen and the dog always loses in these circumstances. Yes we know you may have very well behaved older kids that would probably be great with him however, they have friends that come over. They would be strangers to the dog that may not understand how to interact with him. We do completely understand that he was not given any decompression time when these incidents occurred. We do not blame Rollo for being afraid. But we also cant risk anyone getting hurt or risk Rollo's future either. Anyone adopting Rollo should know they will be getting an amazing dog but you will need to take care with having him meet new people and make sure all people interacting with him know how to properly greet and act around a dog. He does so well meeting people that approach normally. He does try to warn people he is scared. He does not want to hurt anyone. He is so loving but not all dogs can handle people overstepping the proper meeting guidelines. In the home with people he has met, even briefly, he is great. You don't have to walk on eggshells around him. He wants to be a loving loyal dog. He just needs proper introductions to people and time to decompress and build up his confidence. Its hard to put into words how sweet he is despite this issue he has. If you're looking for an excellent dog that's already trained, and you are willing to accommodate for his needs then Rollo may be your guy!! Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA.
