Are you disabled and looking for a prospect? You've come across a handler whose disabilities have now been in remission for quite some time, and a dog who thrives on working above all else! PA training takes 2+ years, many dogs wash, and it's an intense, expensive, and intimidating process no matter what path you take. While my dog has been task trained for my specific needs, you would need to task train for yours. Visual alerts are not a good fit, nor is a family with a cat. Families with young children and other dogs are welcome! He's done tasks to carry items, fetch items, DPT (albeit limited), and scent alerts amongst others. As extra enrichment, we've done additional agility-style, body awareness, confidence, and tracking 'work'. We'd ask you to work with us mentor-style and/or a trainer to ease the transition and ensure you learn how best to be in the special service dog-handler relationship. Our relationship was always one of mutual respect (and awe and gratitude on my part), and was of course strictly positive-reinforcement-only. Dog-wise, when off duty, he both loves and needs dog-dog socialization daily or nearly. He loves a good off leash sprint or wrestle session with another dog, and is able to jump higher than most dogs and presents as quite 'wild' when he's harder at play or in a forest. He enjoys plenty of time to sniff, and time spent lounging in the sun, or your couch, or both. He'll throw his own ball, sleep in positions you're surprised are even physiologically possible, and is generally a very sweet, well behaved dog. People seeing him play think he's uniquely wild, people seeing him at your home think he's uniquely lazy and chill, and people out in the non-pet-dog spaces don't even realize he's there or smile when they see he's human enough to know you have to wait for people to step out of a train/elevator/bus before you can, you know, get onto it. He really does love this kind of work above all else and we have a strong preference to find him the kind of home where his drive will be needed and appreciated. He's become progressively despondent as my symptoms have gotten better and I've needed him less, despite doing other forms of mental work/play. If you believe you have an alternate job for him that's strong on the mental exercise side of things and will take up hours each day, and you can also ensure he won't be alone indoors, we can also consider that, but service dog work is definitely uniquely suited to him!
