About Hobbes

Adoption Fee: $50
Rottweiler
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Hobbes was found as a stray puppy and was starving. He already had his tail docked but didn't have a microchip. We ended up keeping him although we already had a pug. He is now 3 years old. He has some issues with food. He has gotten much better. He doesn't guard his regular food but if he gets something that he thinks his extra special and he may growl or snap to keep people away from it. He will look for food on the counters and in the trash. Hobbes and my other dog never bonded. She tries to attack him all the time and he won't come out of his cage if she is blocking it. He won't come inside if she is blocking the door. In this way, he is very submissive to her. On the other hand, I can't keep a collar or harness on her because he will use it to pick her up. The other day, I picked up my small dog and he grabbed her neck fur and brought her to the ground. She ended up with three or four places where he broke the skin. At the time, it was very scary and I did not know if he was going to hurt her. I don't think he is a vicious dog because if he wanted to, he could have killed her easily. A few days later, he stole a butter wrapper from the counter in the kitchen, and I did not know he had it. He was just laying in the floor and my seven-year-old walked by him. He growled and snapped loudly. He did not touch her, but it bothers me that he was aggressive towards her when she didn't even try to get near the food. He is a good dog, but he definitely needs training. He does not have a lot of experience walking on a leash. My husband said he is so big and strong he is hard to walk. I don't walk him at all because I know that he could pull me or break away from me easily. Since he does not get walked a lot, he is in the backyard, which is fenced. He has been eating the wooden fence planks. My husband replaced several planks and put some wire over them. He is still chewing around the wire. I think he needs somewhere that he can run an exercise or someone who is confident taking him on runs or walks. He is a sweet dog. He loves to be petted, If he is allowed to, he would love to be on the couch with his human. He sleeps in the crate at night with no problem. He does not go to the bathroom in the house, but he does occasionally try to mark. It's really cute every time a siren goes off or a police car goes by he howls along with it. He has been good with my children, but the main reason I want to rehome him is because I don't want to risk him ever actually biting my child. I was afraid he could really injure my small dog, even if he didn't necessarily mean to. When we go out of town, my 70-year-old dad watches him by himself and they have a good time hanging out together. He also kind of bolts in the door from the backyard, So I don't recommend anyone that can be easily knocked down like a small child or an elderly person. I'm looking for someone that will treat him well as is not just leave him in the yard 24/7. When he is in the house, he will settle down after a minute or two and lay down on the floor and chill. We have his DNA test and he is 100% Rottweiler. He is due for a routine exam and shots. He's a healthy dog. We've never had to take him to the vet for any emergencies or any chronic conditions.
