*LOCAL ADOPTION ONLY - Within a one hour drive to Pensacola, FL* KIRA is a gorgeous 13-month-old, 17 lb white Shih Tzu. She came to us with her sister, Athena, after their previous owner realized that two high-energy puppies were more than they could handle. Though we originally adopted them out together, they were returned because their owner was struggling to manage them. We've since separated them, and KIRA has adjusted beautifully on her own. KIRA is a happy, loyal companion who bonds quickly with her person and loves to stick by their side. She settled right into her foster home and acts like she's always belonged there. Whether she's going for walks, exploring the yard, or napping on the couch, KIRA's favorite place is with you. Because of this, she wouldn't be happy spending long hours alone. KIRA has discovered the joy of toys and loves romping around the yard with her foster siblings. Zoomies are her specialty! She's never been an only dog, so we'd love to see her adopted into a home with another playful pup around her size and energy level. She hasn't been around cats or kids, so we're not sure how she'd react to either, but she should do well with respectful older children. KIRA is great on walks and rides nicely in the car. When she and her sister were together, they tried to sneak out for adventures, so, as a precaution, her new home must have a secure privacy-fenced yard to keep her safe. In her foster home, KIRA hasn't had any potty accidents. She does best with a consistent schedule and regular outings every few hours. Full disclosure: her prior adopter struggled with house training, but Kira was left alone for long periods, which didn't set her up for success. She'll need a family committed to keeping her on track and making sure she has a routine and lots of positive reinforcement. As a Shih Tzu, KIRA will need regular grooming to keep her coat looking its best and her adopter should take that cost into consideration. She does enjoy being brushed, which helps! KIRA politely lines up for treats with her foster siblings. She's not much of a barker, though she wasn't too sure about the neighbors' fireworks. Her only naughty quirk? She thinks end tables and nightstands make excellent dog loungers, but who could blame her for wanting the best seat in the house? Speaking of best places to be, at night, KIRA loves to sleep snuggled up on the big bed with her foster dad. KIRA has been to the vet for a wellness check, is up to date on shots, spayed, heartworm negative, has had a 12-month ProHeart heartworm prevention shot, and is microchipped with a lifetime registration. *A Place of Hope Rescue is a foster-based rescue located in Pensacola, Florida.
