About Toothless

Adoption Fee: $395
Australian Shepherd / Bernese Mountain Dog
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Meet Toothless! Named after the beloved night fury from How To Train Your Dragon, he has all the best qualities of the original Toothless- he's lovable, goofy, intelligent, and loyal. We were told he was a 'Mountain Aussie'- ie a cross between an Aussie and a Bernese mountain dog. He really has inherited the best of both of these breeds. He's smart like an Aussie and definitely has that gorgeous merle coat pattern. He's less anxious than other aussies I've worked with too, which I attribute to the BMD. He also has a long tail with beautiful curls! Toothless was surrendered to a shelter by his family after they lost their home. You can tell he has always been a family dog- he loves his people hard! He came to me already knowing sit and shake. He's a fast learner and has already figured out how to use a doggy door and the 'kennel' command. Toothless has quickly found his niche in our home. He respects my older Aussie as the boss and plays well with my smaller young pitbull. He is interested in my mean old tabby cat and tried to chase him a couple times. My cat stood his ground, gave Toothless a couple swipes, and then Toothless backed off. I would say he can cohabitate with a confident cat but probably not a timid cat. He likes my kids (ages 9 and 14) but is a BIG boy at 82 lbs. I would feel better if any kids in the home were past the toddler age, just because he might inadvertently knock them over. I've been feeding him in his kennel, which is his preference, but haven't seen any food aggression from him. He likes to go for walks but loud or very fast cars passing him cause him to spook just a bit. I think with more time and desensitization, this will improve. Also, he is oddly afraid of trash cans??? Just don't walk in trash pickup days and he will be fine. Some considerations: he does have some hot spots on his back right foot that I think was from stress in the shelter. After being treated with Claritin and keeping the wounds clean, they are almost completely scabbed over. He takes medications so well and doesn't fight at all. Toothless will do his big boy bark any time someone enters the house. After a few barks though, he settles down nicely and asks for pets. This would be great if you're a single woman but may not work if someone in your household does shift work OR if you live in an apartment. Toothless is 3 years old, already neutered, and will be up to date on shots, heart worm medications and microchip before adoption. He is an all-around great dog and will make an amazing addition to your family! Here is the application: https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to hisnew furever family.
