About Phin

Doberman Pinscher mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

Meet Phin !! (Said like Finn) This big boy is absolutely stunning and has a fantastic personality. A beautiful dog with good manners and extremely loyal. Phin was adopted from us as a puppy two years ago. Since then he's developed into a well behaved loving boy. Sadly his family had some life changes and had to return him. Phin is a male Doberman. He is almost 3 years old. He's a very big boy. Very tall and large for his breed. He weighs approx 100 Pounds. He could use to lean up a bit but overall is just a large dog. (He does NOT have a docked tail or docked ears.) He is up to date on his vaccines, is microchipped and neutered. He is Heartworm Negative and on preventatives. Phin has been great with his manners and behavior. He's very good about potty training. He is crate trained but has been left out regularly without destroying anything. He's excellent on car rides. Happily meets strangers and isn't a loud dog at all. He needs some work on leash training. (His previous owners trained him on a prong style collar which he did well on but if you'd like to transition him back to a standard collar he will need extra training for that.) His previous family said he is amazing with children to include babies. They said he is very gentle and careful with little ones. He hasn't been a jumper with people and generally is a gentle boy. Despite his size he's not hard to manage. Phin has been great with other dogs. He loves to play with them. He is big and can play a bit rough but nothing aggressive. He is good with respectful dogs but has pinned a dog to the ground that came at him dominantly. He did not hurt the dog but he did not tolerate the behavior. He would be best with another dog that's good with letting him be the head dog in the home. He has not yet met any indoor cats but definitely does not do well with outdoor cats or other woodland creatures that come into the yard. Phin is very treat motivated and eager to learn. This breed is known for being very intelligent. He can be a little stubborn and have some selective hearing when he wants to lol but overall he listens well. He is a physically and mentally energetic dog. He loves to run and play. He would love an active family and/or another fun loving dog to play with. He also has a very cuddly and calm side to him. You must be willing to exercise him to keep him physically and mentally stimulated. If he doesn't have a proper outlet for his energy he won't be happy or well behaved. When he's gotten some exercise he's really relaxed and well behaved. Phin has not shown any food, toy or treat aggression with humans or other dogs. He shares very well. He does chase and often catches small creatures outside. He will go after squirrels and similar. Adopting a Doberman is a huge responsibility. These are strong intelligent dogs. It is absolutely essential that you properly train and socialize them with other animals and people throughout their lives. They need a strong and knowledgeable owner. This is not a breed for a first time dog owner. Unfortunately this breed has a stereotype of being aggressive or scary. By adopting one you need to understand this and ensure your Dobie is an ambassador for the breed and always well trained and under your control at all times. These dogs can be the absolute most loyal and loving family dogs you've ever owned. The way they turn out is largely based on the effort you put into them with training and socialization. If you're not fully willing and committed to do this then it's not the breed for you. These dogs are banned from almost all rentals (to include most vacation rentals) AND banned from many homeowners insurance policies. Do not apply to adopt if you have not called and verified with your landlord and/or insurance company that you can own one. Vet and home checks required. Fence yard preferred. Located in Hampton VA.
