We are reaching out with heavy hearts to ask for help with our dog, Freckles. Freckles found my mother, Susana, seven years ago, and they have been inseparable ever since. She is a deeply loyal and loving companion-so bonded that she follows Nanna from room to room, always wanting to be close. She is affectionate, calm, and gentle under normal conditions, and has learned to cohabitate with one other dog after time and patience, though she generally struggles with other dogs and unfamiliar animals. Freckles is an indoor-outdoor dog. Her ideal day includes wandering the yard, sunbathing, and lying near Nanna wherever she is. But when it rains or storms, everything changes. Freckles has extreme storm anxiety. The shift in weather triggers deep fear in her-she becomes unrecognizable. Her eyes go vacant with panic, and she enters a state of terror that makes her claw through doors, walls, and even crates to escape. Her claws have torn through solid wood. She has injured herself and, unintentionally, injured Nanna in these frantic episodes as Nanna tries to hold or comfort her. We've tried everything-muzzles, ThunderShirts, calming meds, natural remedies, crates, leashes, mitts, animal communicators, trainers'| nothing has helped her through the sheer intensity of her fear. She becomes an escape artist, and it is simply no longer safe for her or for my aging parents. My mother is now 78 and my father 80. Due to health and financial issues, they are being forced to leave their home and cannot take Freckles with them. It is devastating, as Freckles has been a part of the family and deeply loved, but we have exhausted all options to rehome her over the last 3 years. Please-if there is any way you can help us find a safe place for Freckles, ideally with someone experienced in trauma or storm-phobic dogs, or guide us toward a sanctuary or program that can offer her a better life, we would be incredibly grateful. We are heartbroken but know we can't continue to put my mother at risk, and Freckles deserves safety and support that we can no longer provide. Thank you for your time and compassion.
