Pit Bull
Age: Young Adult

Sammie's Story: Sammie's journey is unfortunate and heartbreaking. She was found with puppies and an aggressive male dog in a shop inside a burned-out building in Compton, California. When the shop was closed, Sammie and the others were left on the street. Sammie's mate proved dangerous and had to be euthanized. Concerned that Sammie's future looked bleak, a caring cat rescue opened their heart and took her and her puppies into their care. Sammie's puppies were then taken in by a dog rescue, but they did not have room for Sammie. For several weeks, Sammie was moved around from place to place, including veterinary offices, boarding kennels, and several foster homes until the right fit for Sammie was determined. During that time, it was revealed that a kennel environment is not the right fit for Sammie. She succumbs to kennel stress, which greatly affected her behavior. Also during that period, a foster to adopt home was found for Sammie, with other dogs and cats. Within days, the adopters found out that Sammie's prey drive for cats is unsafe, so she was returned to the cat rescue. At this time Sammie is being fostered in a newly constructed dog run, with a doghouse in the side yard of one of the cat fosters. She is not able to be in the house because the home has cats. Even with this harrowing start in life, and the chaos that has ensued, Sammie is resilient and ready to take the next step and find a family who will cherish her forever. Sammie's Personality: Sammie is a bundle of positivity and playfulness. She's curious about the world and enjoys exploring new sights, sounds, and smells. Though her adventurous spirit keeps her moving, she's also a cuddler at heart. Sammie craves human companionship and thrives in an environment where she gets plenty of love and attention. Although Sammie has not been in a traditional home environment, except for a few days here and there, she has already learned 'come', 'out' and most recently, 'sit'. With a little encouragement (and some tasty treats!), she will be ready to learn even more. Sammie is still learning how to be a perfect girl on a leash (it's new to her), and she can become excited if she sees a cat or small running critter. Her foster mom has had great results redirecting Sammie's attention and continuing walking. Sammie is currently in a backyard, and for the most part she is very quiet. She occasionally barks if someone is near, but the barking is short lived. Her friendly nature makes her great with adults, and probably older children. Her brief exposure to a toddler made her nervous, so we do not recommend a household with small children. Sammie has been in a temporary home with other dogs (she did great), but she's just as happy soaking up the spotlight as the only pet in the house. Sammy is respectful when meeting other dogs, and she has done well ignoring most poor behavior in other dogs. In her temporary home, she was great following the lead of the other dogs and going potty outside (only). Currently, because she is in a dog run, she almost always waits for her walks to go potty. Health and Care Information: Sammie is in good health. She has been fully vaccinated, spayed, and microchipped for her safety. She weighs around 51-53 pounds, which is perfect for her medium frame. Sammie's top and bottom front teeth are ground down to nubs. The Veterinarian suspects she was raised behind a fence, or in a cage, and she spent hours biting metal. Sammie has no known allergies or medical issues, and her foster Mom has ensured she is up to date on all her preventative care, including flea and tick treatments. When it comes to diet, Sammie enjoys high-quality wet and dry food (her favorite is wet food) and the occasional treat. Regular exercise and mental stimulation are key to keeping Sammie happy and healthy. What Sammie is Looking For: Sammie is looking for an active and loving forever home. She would thrive with a family who has a securely fenced yard where she can play freely, but she would also do well in a home where she gets regular walks and outdoor adventures. Sammie is looking for an active and loving forever home. She would thrive with a family who has a securely fenced yard where she can play freely, but she would also do well in a home where she gets regular walks and outdoor adventures. Sammie loves adults, and may do well with older children. However, brief exposure to a toddler caused Sammie noticeable anxiety, so we recommend a home with adults, and perhaps older children. While Sammie loves people and is fairly well mannered, she would appreciate a family who can continue her training and help her to grow into the best version of herself. Whether you're a single person looking for a loyal companion, a couple ready to expand your family with a furry kid, or a household with older kids in need of a furry sibling, Sammie is ready to fill your home with unconditional love and joy.
