Maui is a very sweet dog who has been through a lot over the last couple of years. His family is in crisis and no longer able to care for him. He would thrive with someone he can depend on and I believe he will become a loyal snuggle buddy in time. He does fine on his own during the day while I'm at work. Has not been destructive or had accidents in the house. He walks well on a leash (no pulling) but does not need a lot of exercise. He may be reactive to other humans/dogs while on leash at first. My sense is that this is anxiety. It has lessened over time and now he often barks to get the passing human to stop for pets. Like any dog, he would love a yard but it is not necessary. He enjoys sitting on the porch and watching the world go by. Maui has shared a home with cats and there have been no issues. He has been to doggie day care where he has been around multiple other dogs without incident. My sense is he would do best with another mellow dog or as an only dog. I do not recommend a home with children as he startles easily and may snap in defense. This may change over time as he settles into a consistent routine and gets to know his people but I would not count on that. Maui has many typical dachsund traits. He does bark a fair amount. Some of that will settle as he becomes more comfortable and familiar with his surroundings and routine. He is fairly independent and stubborn at times so he would benefit from a consistent and steady hand. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Vet records available. Vet reference and home visit will be required for adoption.
