We adopted Graham September 2022. He's up to date with all vaccinations, is micro-chipped, neutered, gets heartworm, flea treatment and nails trimmed monthly and had his teeth professionally cleaned within the past year. He just went to the vet so we have a full 6 month supply of heartworm and flea, 35lb container of food, lots of treats, toys and bedding. He's gentle and friendly. Loves to lay and cuddle, go on walks, and lounge in the back-yard. He likes squeaky toys and peanut butter, and is not food motivated. However, upon adoption from the Hanover County, VA shelter, we immediately noticed he suffers from sleep startle, but over the last 6 months it's expanded to whenever he feels nervous he barks, growls, shows teeth, regardless who is near him. I have 3 children and they've each experienced this. Yesterday morning, my husband took him to the side yard to use the bathroom and his leash caught his hind leg. My husband pulled it to get it loose and Graham exhibited those warning signs and then lunged at my husband who put him in a hold to protect himself. They stayed like that for a few minutes, tried to verbally calm him down but every time he would let up a little, he felt Graham was going to bite him. Graham never did and eventually my husband let him go, Graham came to me and went inside. My husband said he has seen this before growing up and believes it's only a matter of time before something else happens that is worse. Even if we had the money for certified behavioral therapist (which we don't), I think our household has contributed to the situation. My husband is unable to come back from that, is afraid for himself and our family, and has given me until Tuesday night to find him a home or no kill shelter or he's taking him back to the county shelter. Our house is quite chaotic and loud. I'm devastated and want the best for all of us. I don't think our home is right for Graham. I think he'd love being with a single female with less noise and distractions to give him a calmer environment.
