About Oscar

��Z%81�%9D%A4��%8FOSCAR�%9D%A4��%8F��Z%81 (Folsom, CA) Oscar is likely a Chiweenie and weighs just under 17 lbs. His journey hasn't been easy. He came into the shelter after being hit by a car. There were concerns about brain trauma, but an MRI at UCD only showed nonspecific brain plaques. We estimate his age is between 5-7 years (he has some gray under his chin). Oscar is completely deaf, and what was once thought to be neurological issues is most likely due to his hearing loss. He struggles with anxiety, especially in new situations or around unfamiliar people. When stressed, he may pace, run in circles, or hide. He also resource guards food, treats, and his bed with growling, but has *never* tried to bite. �%9D%A4��%8F�'�%8D�٩� Despite this, Oscar is incredibly sweet and wants so badly to be loved. He's quiet, non-reactive to dogs on walks, and only barks with excitement when his foster mom comes home. He sleeps soundly in a crate at night and is fully potty trained- going outside when someone's home, or using a pad in his pen when alone. Oscar would likely do best as an only dog, but he can live with others- he simply ignores them. It took about three weeks for him to settle in and feel safe. He thrives on structure and routine. Walks are still stressful for him (especially if people are around), but he remains calm and manageable. At home, he plays with toys, doesn't use furniture, and prefers not to be picked up or placed on couches. He's not a fit for homes with small children due to his resource guarding and sensitivity to touch. He's made great progress and now tolerates gentle handling, but will need time and trust with a new family. Once bonded, he loves belly rubs, has a favorite neck-scratch spot, and gives kisses. To best suport him, we've tried anxiety medications. They haven't been effective for Oscar. What truly helps him is patience, consistency, and love.
