About Amelia

Adoption Fee: $100
Lab / Australian Cattle Dog
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Meet Amelia! This girl is one of a kind and as silly as they get. She will make you laugh throughout every day. With her goofy facial expressions, her unique play style, funky run-hops and belly flops, she is a sure way to get your daily dose of laughter in. Amelia is a herding breed mix and can be a little nippy when she gets excited or is seeking attention. Due to those tendencies and prey drive, she would do best in a home without children or cats while she continues with her training. We are looking for people that will remain calm and patient while she works on replacing this habit with positive behaviors. This smart girl is eager to please, knows many manners and walks great on leash and harness! While very cuddly and affectionate, Amelia has some fear and sensitivity to body handling. We are looking for a home with someone who has experience with fearful dogs. Amelia is food, toy, and praise-motivated and has made great progress in many ways! Her new home would need to continue using positive reinforcement and force-free training with the help of a certified trainer. APSFH would love to connect you with some good resources and trainers. Although she still has some work to be done with her impulse control and some resource guarding prevention, she just needs someone to show her new ways to gain attention and to help her feel safe and secure. Amelia is easily redirected and loves training, so this shouldn't be too hard for the right family! She has made immense progress with the behaviors listed in her history and bio but is now at risk of Euthanasia due to quality of life and lack of adoption prospects here. Despite all the progress Amelia has made, she has started to regress in certain ways. Amelia has been at APS-FH for over a year now and has been very depressed while in her room, she has skipped meals, and it has been quite challenging for staff members to get her back into her kennel. She will refuse treats and use avoidant behavior, refusing to move. Extra efforts are being made and while she is starting to make progress again with returning to her kennel and eating, she has been given a timeline for euthanasia. In the right home with someone who will work with her and understands fearful dogs, Amelia has the potential to be an amazing companion. She has so much love for life and deserves to know a loving home. This wiggly girl has so much affection to give to her new family. Amelia is great with other dogs and has been non-reactive with them. She has made many fast friends here at the shelter, who have many different playstyles. We believe she would do well with a passive doggy sibling as long as they are a good match and are respectful of each other. If you open your home and your heart to this goofy sweet girl, we know you'll fall fast in love with Amelia, just like we have! In return she will forever repay you in all the hugs and kisses you could want.
