We sadly need to find a good home for our 10 year old Australia Cattle Dog, Ted. We live in the San Francisco Bay Area and would be willing to travel anywhere in California to find the right home for Ted. Ted is a very good, sweet, and fun dog. We adopted him at 10 months from SPCA. He was found as a stray in Merced, CA. We need to find him a home after 10 years because our lives went from married with no kids to 3 kids 5 years and under (we had twins) and two full-time jobs. We just aren't able to give Ted the time and attention he deserves. Further, with small kids, our household is incapable of keeping doors closed where Ted can get out and chase any and everything. About Ted: Ted is a very loyal and energetic cattle dog. He is great with kids and loves to be around HIS people at all times. He is playful around the house and loves to chase a ball. He currently spends 1 hour a day in an open field with a dog walker playing with 10 other dogs. In big open spaces like this, he is good with other dogs. In or near his home, he is protective of his space and other dogs aren't welcome. We imagine he would be OK with another dog(s) in the home with time to acclimate to a multi-dog home. He is great at the vet (he oddly loves the vet) and loves hikes, runs, and walks. In an open space, he loves to explore and is fine off leash with solid voice command. Because he can be unpredictable around new dogs, we usually leash him when passing others on the trail. He is generally healthy, but eats a prescription diet because of a sensitive stomach and takes medicine for a nail condition that isn't a day-to-day issue. What makes Ted special. Ted is always on alert, like most cattle dogs. He will uncontrollably chase any fast-moving animal. Cat, squirrel, skunk, deer, horse, raccoon - seriously, everything. Over time, he will become very protective of his home and bark mercilessly at every delivery driver or mail carrier. Ted's alertness applies to all fast moving things, including bouncing basketballs, footballs, ocean waves, and so on. He can be a challenge at the beach or a busy park. A bit about Ted's ideal next home: Ted needs access to space to run and play, preferably a sizable piece of land and/or a parent with an active lifestyle. As mentioned, other dogs are ok but time will be needed to adjust. Female dogs are better than male dogs for Ted. Ted has been a wonderful dog and a central part of our family but we can't give him what he needs and risk of him getting out could end up with him hurt.
