Hello- This is Poe, he is a standard poodle and Greater Swiss Mountain Dog mix, 5 years old. My family and I have had him since he was a puppy, things started out great as we went to training, on walks, about town etc. Then after the birth of our fist kid he developed leash anxiety. Trainers told us that daycare ruined him, but who knows. When he sees another dog while on leash he freaks out- wants to go play with them. He also gets very anxious while on leash when we take him Home Depot or around town. This has completely affected how he now lives- we leave him at home when we go hike or go play in the park because his behavior dominates anything we try to do with him outside our home. Poe does love getting out and going on walks, its just hard for us to control him when he sees other dogs, he has pulled me down a few times- and his barking/anxiety dominates the experience.... so if you're trying to enjoy a nice calm walk by the sea... NOPE. nope. With two kids now and full time jobs, we do not have the time to work with him. We will never take him to a shelter, but he does deserve better. Poe is a sweet boy who needs an individual or family with the time to work with him. He is very kind, goofy. Good with kids (we have a 2.5 year old and a 4 month old). He is good with other dogs and cats. He WILL CHASE CATS. We have a cat, Poe chases him but does not hurt him. At home he is very calm and easy going BUT (there is always a but) will confer surf and destroy random things out of boredom. I can hardly blame him, but it still does piss me off and I would not want someone to be caught off guard by this.. He has destroyed glasses, bottles, binkies... mainly he goes after counter food. He will bark at people coming to the front door, but is very sweet and gentle to people who have come over. Has also been good with our friends kids. For YEARS we have been holding out hope that he will chill out or that we will eventually have time to work with him- he is a very cool dog and is the first dog I have ever had who has developed this issue... But it's not fair to him. If he can find a family who can give him the full life he deserves then we need to have that door open for him. Dogs should be a part of every part of the family- going outdoors, running around, exploring places that can fill their dreams with new landscapes- not stuck at home, to one yard, every day. Please reach out if you think you are that person. Please note that Poe is an indoor dog, he goes outside to potty and play a bit but prefers to be indoors.
