About Courage

German Shepherd mix
Age: Puppy
Sex: Female

Dear folks About a year ago I rescued an emaciated German Shepherd mix puppy found near the airport in Nashville. She was about a year plus at the time and seemed to survive being outside by eating anything-cardboard, trash, small animals, etc. She is a shy, agile dog who jumps over gates, jumps on my counter and may or may not use the bathroom outside-mostly depending on how afraid she is. I did not crate her when she came because I was afraid she would be too scared in the crate after being outside for so long. I have a crate now that she enters sometimes on her own%BD'%BD|.if I try to get her to go in the crate, she will not budge. She gets along well with my other two dogs-a female lab mix who is three years old, and a two year old Australian Cattle dog. The problem with my keeping her is that she is scared of my granddaughter, who is almost four years old, and she is not safe with our cats. I recently rescued a momma cat and some kittens, who lived upstairs for five months. I kept the door closed and barricaded with tote crates, yet somehow this dog got into the room and got one of the kittens, who was killed. I think the Shepherd, who is named Courage, thought the kitten was a squirrel and basically hunted him and squeezed him to death. Needless to say, I was heartbroken that I had not kept the Kitten safe, and I had misjudged Courage's level of socialization. So, to make a long story short, I am worried about the safety of my other cats and worried that Courage needs a home without small animals and children. I am gone all day for work, and Courage often finds things to chew, eat and/or destroy while I am gone. I do not have the time or the money to adequately train her, and keeping her does not feel like a safe plan. Please let me know if you would be willing to accept her as a rescue, or know of other rescues I could contact. I really want to do right by this beautiful girl. She is shy, sweet, smart, strong, stubborn and a survivor. Sometimes, she seems very sad to me. Thank you, Bette Shulman 615-333-7684 [email protected]
