BDRA is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) charity that accepts no fees when helping individuals or other rescues. 100% of donations go directly to the care of the animals. If you'd like to help us continue our mission, please donate at: https://www.blinddogrescue.org/donate-1. Name: Callie (Calamity Jane) Age: DOB 3/31/16 Breed: Labrador Retriever, 84 pounds Sex: Female (not spayed) Location: Montgomery County, Missouri Sweet special Callie needs a home that can better handle her special needs. Vet Info: Callie is current with her vaccinations and is HW-. She has glaucoma and is currently receiving 3 types of drops, 2x/day. Her eyes really should be removed. Vet wasn't sure about spaying her due to age but possibly eyes and spay at the same time? Arthritis in rear legs and needs a dental. Callie is microchipped. Dog Info: Callie is believed to have been a puppy mill breeder. She is leash trained and knows quite a few commands: Come, sit, this way, watch your head, keep coming, No, It's in the middle. She is outgoing and good with men, women and children of all ages. She is also good with cats. She is not aggressive, she did snap at a cat one time but did not connect. Now, if she starts being possessive of anything she is just told, 'NO' and listens. Previous owner told the current owner that Callie was let out of her cage once or twice a week. When Callie first arrived at the current owner's home she would urinate in small amounts as she walked. Owner started taking her out every half hour and gradually increased the time and after a while she started urinating 'normally'. Owner reports that she loves everyone and is the sweetest girl. Owner must rehome her due to health issues even though the owner absolutely loves Callie. She is described as loving, appreciative and a sweet couch potato. She goes right into her crate when the owner has to leave or at night at bedtime. She loves to get brushed, loves fresh water and is 'so tolerant' of the owner's three cats. She obey commands whenever she is outside. She runs around like a puppy when teenagers are playing with her. The difficulties for the owner are the three different drops. Owner's medical condition makes it difficult to do it alone. 'First, she has to have an eye wash in both eyes, wait fifteen minutes and put an anti-inflammatory drop in each eye. Fifteen minutes later lubricating drops are given. Callie gets a treat after each drop, which she likes. But isn't super cooperative either.' Owner now believes that removing the eyes would have been the better option. Food is another issue. It is 'so difficult to get her to eat. We've tried several foods, and the vet didn't like me adding a little can to her food to encourage her to eat. Feeding is frustrating and many times I end up hand feeding the remaining food.' Food is unable to be left out for her to return to as she is interested in eating because of the cats. 'Feeding is a challenge. I have to stand by her. I feed her three times a day.' Callie also doesn't do well to change. She needs to keep a normal routine. Consistency is critical for her. Callie has come a long way with house breaking. She has only had six accidents since October but she will just stand at the door when she wants to go out and doesn't make a sound. Bell training would be a good idea for a new owner. The last issue is that she has to be lifted into the car and at 84 pounds, that is now quite difficult for the owner to do. Callie has not been exposed to any dogs since owner has had her so is unsure how she would be with other dogs but owner feels like there wouldn't be a problem since she is so good with cats. Callie occasionally gets scared of changing from carpet to hard floor and will need a slip lead (she never wore a collar/harness and leash) and with patience, she will follow. She can not but put on a lead screwed into the ground outside. It petrifies her. She does well off leash and follows all command. Owner will provide everything that you need to know about Callie as well as many of Callie's belongings. **Owner Surrender Disclaimer: These are blind and visually impaired dogs who are living in homes, but their owners can no longer keep them.
