About Homer

Adoption Fee: $25
Mountain Cur / Lab
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

We adopted Homer as a puppy along with a female litter mate over 6 years ago from New Leash on Life. We love him very much, but we have come to the heartbreaking decision that he needs a new home. His territorial behavior has caused issues with our neighbors and all of our attempts to mitigate the behavior have failed. Homer is a high energy dog who spends most of his day patrolling our fenced in yard, chasing anything that comes into the yard, leaves, shadows, butterflies, etc. He is very territorial of the yard and our property. When our grown children bring their dogs for a visit, Homer gets along with them with no issue both in the house and in the yard. We live next to a community pond that has an easement that allows people to walk between the pond and our fence. Anytime someone comes near the yard, Homer's hair stands up on his back and he barks and runs back and forth along the fence, shoving his head between the bars and lunging at anyone passing. When he is in this mode, he is very intimidating, especially to children. We have had two incidents over the past 5 years where he has nipped neighbors who got too close to the fence. His territorial behavior has become a nuisance to our neighbors who don't feel comfortable walking near our yard or even being out in their yards due to his behavior. When we take him to the Dog park, he has no issues with other dogs or other people. He routinely goes to Hampton Cove Pet Day care and has never had an issue with people or other dogs. The attendants at day care love him and routinely remark about how sweet his is with them. In 2020, he successfully completed a 2 week board and training program at OffLeash K9 Training with Christie Heckman. When strangers or family members come to our home, he will bark at them initially but after a few minutes he is fine and has no behavioral issues. This includes our young grandchildren. He is just super territorial about the yard, and in fairness to our neighbors, we need to find Homer a new home, hopefully with a big yard and a wood privacy fence that he can't see through.
