About Teddy

Adoption Fee: $50
Poodle
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Teddy is approximately a 65 pound 5 year old standard poodle. I have tried this before, but am committed to finding him a new home that is a good fit. We've had Teddy since he was a puppy. He is well cared for, groomed regularly, up-to-date on vaccines and heart worm. I'll start with the bad. He is reactive including leash reactive. He bit my neighbor's child recently, which is what has motivated us to finally rehome. It wasn't a serious injury - one puncture wound. This is his only incident with biting someone. He will chase - cars and dogs being walked. When he escaped the house once, he bit a dog on the bottom that was on a walk. You have to be very careful when entering or exiting the home. I haven't walked him in a long time, but have tried multiple kinds of leashes, harnesses, collars, and techniques in the past. He keeps watch at the windows and has punched holes through them a couple of times when strangers approach the house. However, it's been a long time since he has broken a window! He doesn't like strangers entering the home and may rush them. I usually put him outside when anyone comes over (unless the person is comfortable with big dogs), and he will continue to bark until let back in. He seems more comfortable with female visitors. He will bark at the front window if me or my family venture to the front yard. His bark is rather starling and makes us jump often. This is kind of unrelated, but he loves to eat food off the table and counters. So we have to keep a close eye on that. The good. He is an absolutely beautiful dog. Not food aggressive at all and great with my children. My baby will put her hand in his bowl while he's eating, and he isn't bothered. My kids will roll on him, climb on him, and pull his tail. He will given a warning growl eventually if kids keep climbing on him. When Teddy was about 2 or 3, I did Rover and kept other dogs in my house. Teddy did well with this and even enjoyed having a playmate. He may do well in a home with other big dogs. He does enjoy playing 'keepy uppy' with balloons or playing catch in the house. He loves butt, chin, and ear scratches. Teddy is very protective of his family. Once he understands you're not a threat, he loves you. He will sit in my lap or bury his head in my lap. If Teddy hadn't bitten my neighbor and I had the financial means, I would send Teddy to a trainer. I use to send him to doggie day camp regularly to burn up his energy. He loves a hike in the woods. He really needs lots of running, play, and stimulation to be at his best. He would be a great hunting dog or do well with someone with lots of land. Our lives have really changed in the past couple of years - job losses and changes, kids, financial losses. We just aren't able to give Teddy the support he needs. If you have read all this and still are interested, please call and I'll be happy to send you some more pictures.
