About Bruce

Available for Adoption in Portsmouth, VA Meet Bruce! Bruce is an 8-9 month old Australian Shepherd mix that will steal your heart! He is about 55 lbs (still has some growing to do), neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccinations and preventatives. Bruce is mostly potty trained and can typically be kenneled for several hours before needing to go potty. He knows basic obedience like sit, lay down, come, wait, and leave it. He has a calmer demeanor, but does still have some puppy behaviors like wanting to mouth things (your hand or the cat), jumping on/pawing at doors, and counter surfing. These behaviors are easily curbed with observation and consistency. He does very well with the word 'no' and redirection. He is a people pleaser and does not like to get into trouble, but he will do just about anything for food (good or bad). Bruce loves people after a slow introduction and lots of high reward treats. He has some stranger danger and needs more socialization to help him build his confidence around new people. In this case, we are requiring a meet and greet prior to adoption to ensure a god fit. He tends to warm up to woman quicker than men, but still likes men with the proper adjustment time. He loves to cuddle and would be a lap dog if you let him. Bruce is working on crate training, but does not necessarily care to be in the crate. He slobbers a ton and will try to pull items through the crate if they are close enough. He will get into things and pace a lot if he is not kenneled during the day when no one is home. He is not kenneled at night and prefers to sleep on the bed, as long as there is space for him. He will also sleep on the ground on a comfy dog bed, if you don't want him on the human bed. Bruce would prefer other confident furry friends to play with, but is also just happy to have alone time with his people. He gets along with most everyone (cats, dogs, chickens), with the exception that he has not been tested around kids or small dogs. He loves the cats and will try to follow them everywhere and play with them if they'll let him. He can be a little overwhelming to them sometimes, but the 'leave it' command gets him to stop quickly. We suggest no cats, unless you have a confident and dog savvy cat that is not scared of big dogs. Bruce is a one of a kind boy and is an absolute sweetheart. He would be great for anyone looking for a more down to earth, go with the flow kind of dog. He is fine with going for lengthy walks/hikes or just being a couch potato (with lots of pets and snuggles of course). Bruce is the squishiest and sweetest boy you will find!
