We rescued Boston from San Bernardino, California during the wildfires. The shelters were overpopulated due to so many dogs being displaced. Boston was found as a stray, brought to a high kill shelter, and scheduled to be euthanized. Upon seeing the post about Boston we knew we had to rescue him. We are a heeler family and have two heeler mixes of our own and were drawn to Boston's story and name. We felt he was destined to come to Boston with that name and worked with a rescue organization in California to bring him to Massachusetts with several other dogs who had also been saved by New Englanders. Boston is estimated to be between 2-4 years of age. Since arriving at our home, Boston has been neutered and is up to date on all his vaccinations. Boston is on Simparcia Trio, a heartworm, flea and tick preventative. Boston weighed 45 lbs at his last check up in March. Overall Boston is in good health but may require removal of one of his canine teeth which is partially broken off but it does not currently bother him or affect his ability to eat. Boston has been with us, just shy of two months, and is ready for his forever home. Boston is innately sweet and the definition of a velcro dog. He has medium energy for a heeler. Boston is house trained, has learned to walk on a leash, enjoys his crate for short periods of time, and is VERY food motivated. We completed the EMBARK DNA test and Boston is 56% Australian Cattle Dog, 17.2 % Siberian Husky, 15.8% Australian Shepard, 6.2% German Shepard and 4.8% Supermutt. Boston is a wonderful combination of breeds and strikingly beautiful. What we know: Boston is friendly with people and other dogs but should be in a NO cat home. Although Boston seems to have adjusted to our cat he is prone to chase or play too rough for our dog savvy cat. Boston enjoys the company of our dogs but could be in a dog only home too because he is more interested in people and soaking up all the love. We have two dogs. Boston and Ollie are great pals but our female dog Ruby, who has some dog reactivity, tolerates Boston but is counting down the days until Boston is adopted. Boston is patient with Ruby and has tried to win her over but has been unsuccessful. We are unsure if Boston is good with children. All the children in our life are older so Boston has not been tested with kids under 12. On walks, Boston has been known to bark or growl when seeing other dogs, but when we have allowed Boston to meet dogs in a secure area, off leash, he has been friendly and ready to run and play, but may become overwhelmed with multiple dogs, like at a dog park. I am hoping Boston will go to a home with heeler experience. Although low to medium energy, Boston has many heeler traits and is 'mouthy' at times, typical of the breed, but can easily be directed with a chew toy. We have seen less and less of this since he arrived. Boston has also been known to herd us but has not exhibited any nipping tendencies but will often bark or use his body to communicate. Boston does exhibit separation anxiety and is learning to settle in his crate but it has been a process. Initially, Boston would bark constantly in his crate but he is able to settle now and only whimpers a bit on and off for a few minutes. I work from home but have to leave periodically and Boston has been successful in his crate. Boston is learning his manners but will benefit from a basic obedience class that would also be a good bonding experience with his new owner. Boston knows his name well and is able to sit and come and has surprisingly good recall which we have been working on. Boston was found as a stray so it's hard to know what his first years were like but he is very affectionate, smart, and food motivated. Boston should eat separately from other animals in the home, especially when given a bone or chew toy. We have observed some resource guarding with bones, specific to animals, not humans. Boston has also been known to counter surf so please SECURE your food. We are actively working on this. Boston is beginning to enjoy car rides and knows the command 'load up,' and can easily get in and out of the car now. He does whimper during long car rides and exhibits some anxiety when we get out of the car and he needs to 'stay.' The ideal home would be someone who works from home, has a fenced in yard, and time to dedicate to Boston's traning. Boston has been known to dig when bored so keeping him stimulated is important. He likes his Pupcicle, scent games, and is learning to catch a frisbee. Boston is very eager to learn and please and has A LOT of potential. Boston loves to cuddle and although 45lbs thinks he is a lap dog and enjoys laying his head on his human when relaxing together. We love Boston and are honored to have had this time with him and have hopefully provided him with the love and support, medical care, and basic training needed to help him be successful in his forever home.
