About Ollie

Hi there, I'm Oliver or Ollie, from the Reno/Tahoe area! I'm a four-year-old Australian Shepherd with a gorgeous blue merle coat and a heart full of potential. I have piercing blue eyes, and am tall, long and lean at almost 50 lbs. I haven't had the easiest start in life, but I've come a long way and I'm ready for my next chapter with a loving forever family. For most of my life, I was neglected and confined to a muddy backyard. I didn't know what the world had to offer, and I'd never played with toys, chewed on proper bones, ridden in a car, or visited the vet. I was nervous, unsure how to behave, and even rudely barked and lunged at strangers because everything felt so overwhelming. I was born from stable working farm dogs and am a very affectionate, super sweet, and loving doggie so that has really helped me make big strides quickly. Thankfully, I've also had amazing humans who've helped me grow and learn-and now, I've truly blossomed. Since coming into rescue, I've made incredible progress. I'm now potty trained, and I've learned commands like sit, lie down, 'release,' reliable recall, and how to heel politely on a leash. I've also mastered placework (a really good stay) and crate training, and I load up into my car kennel like a perfect gentleman. I am not destructive in the home. I'm working on muzzle training for vetting and grooming. I've worked hard on my manners and no longer bark at strangers-I've learned how to stay calm and confident. Here's the thing, though: I'm not a 'pay and go' dog. I've been given extensive and expensive training to become the amazing dog I am today, and it's important that my new family continues to work with me so I can thrive. My trainers at Oliver Dog Training (I know, good name, right?) are dedicated to helping me succeed and want to work with you to ensure you're set up for success with me. You will need to work with my trainers over a few days to get to know me and learn what I know. You can talk to my foster mom more about this and other services I get! While I'm a very well-trained boy now, I need a family that's ready to put in the effort to keep me on the right path. My ideal adopters are a single person or a family with older kids. Other dogs are great as I love other dogs and I play well but I am okay to live alone, too. If you have other dogs, a meet and greet will be required. I have met livestock and this week I am being assessed with cats, so stay tuned. I would love to be an active hiking/walking/running partner, but I also enjoy lazy days at home, cuddled up with you. I'd be a perfect camping buddy, ready for all your outdoor adventures, I can even join you in dog friendly stores! While I prefer you are home the majority of the day, I have no trouble spending time in my crate while you work or do 'people stuff', and as a matter of fact I enjoy my alone time and downtime. Sometimes I'm a little talkative but mostly I'm calm and quiet. An apartment might not be the best for me. You must have knowledge of herding breeds or an appetite for learning (and willing to follow directions). Be willing to work with the foster and trainer over one to two days in Reno to learn about my training and do a slow introduction with me. I have many more years to learn to play with toys and to possibly even explore dog sports. I'm up to date on my vaccines, healthy, recently neutered, and ready to meet my perfect match.
