About Bilbo

German Shepherd / Chihuahua
Age: Puppy
Sex: Male

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE BIO ON THIS DOG BEFORE REQUESTING AN APPLICATION. MANY OF OUR DOGS HAVE STRICT REQUIREMENTS FOR THEIR ADOPTION. 11-month-old male Shepherd/ Chihuahua? mix, about 20 pounds. This handsome and sweet puppy was found by the reservoir in Yakima along with his injured siblings and likely his mama (found deceased). We believe that Tolkien (listed here for adoption) is probably his brother). Bilbo survived a coyote attack, had surgery to re-insert his intestines and close up the opening on his stomach. He was not expected to live but has recovered wonderfully without any lasting effects! Bilbo is exceptionally intelligent, easy to train and eager to please. He loves pets and snuggles, gives kisses on command, and really loves 'hugging' you or being in your lap while you watch TV. More of a homebody and people person than a lone explorer, he can be in a home with a small yard or no yard as long as he gets in a few daily walks and has chew toys and training for his pet tricks. He doesn't approach adult strangers for the first few seconds but will interact quickly with encouragement. Seems to love men as much as or even more than women. Does not bark (ever) but will cry when you come home and he is still in his crate, reminding you to let him out. Bilbo is very respectful of other dogs and does not get involved in any kind of bad behavior at the dog park. He will interact with smaller dogs but freezes when a large dog approaches him, which makes sense, as he was the victim of an attack. This dog loves to eat! He wants to try all kinds of treats and likes all dog food, dry or wet. He was easily leash trained in just a few minutes (goes on runs with his foster mom) and responds quickly to consistent leadership. He will pee/poop in the same spot in the yard but really enjoys longer walks so he can see what's going on in the neighborhood. Bilbo knows sit/stay/lay down/drop it, and 'OK take it' for food and treats. Needs at least one good chew toy and a little direction around what is an acceptable chew toy-fabric and plastic items left out are fair game until he is trained that they aren't for chewing. Excellent at riding in a car, but very eager to jump out when you open the hatch, so you have to give him the 'stay' command until you are ready. He's learning everything about being in a big city, including loud noises, big cars that and buses, going into stores. As a puppy, he is moderately energetic but doesn't do zoomies and takes the stairs at a moderate pace rather than running. He loves a short game of fetch with toys and will try to softly bite your hand to get you to play with him until you tell him no. He is used to being let outside to pee 4-5 hours until he is an adult. So far, only two accidents in the house! He is great with other dogs, cats are unknown. You must live within a three-hour radius of Seattle, WA, (such as Portland, Vancouver B.C., etc.), so we can arrange for a home visit. If your home seems like a great fit for the dog you would like to adopt, you must then drive to meet the dog at one of our weekend events or at the fosters home.
