About Brutus fka Duke

German Shepherd mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Male

2 year old high energy GSD who needs someone with an active lifestyle. 30 minute walks are not enough for this gorgeous boy. He loves car rides, hiking in the mountains, going for walks and to be near his person at all times. He is house and crate trained but does like to steal a slipper or two :) Brutus came to our house with our 3 dogs. Our dogs are calm and he is the complete opposite. Our two older dogs cannot handle him because he is so rambunctious. If you know the breed, then you know what I am talking about. He does not understand personal space for his human or the other dogs. For the first 2 years of his life, he was kept in a backyard. When he came to stay with us, he refused to go outside unless it was for a walk or you were with him. Once he learned the doggy door, he will go out to go potty but then he is right back in the house. I believe he is afraid he will be locked out again. He doesn't know how to play with the other dogs. He tries to play with our lab, but our lab is afraid of him, most likely due to the high energy level and rough play. Our lab is lazy :) He showed some food aggression which we were able to correct and we have had no issues in that area. He isn't aggressive, he just doesn't realize his own size and strength so a house with older children might be better suited. I would say he is somewhere between very dominant and somewhat dominant. He was extremely thin when he came to our house and he has put on some pounds since then. The hikes in the mountains have put some muscle on him as well. He has great recall up in the mountains but not so much in the house. Brutus would be best suited with someone who understands German Shepherds. They can be a lot but he is also the most loyal animal I've ever met. You want a shadow, a best friend, a travel buddy, he's your guy. He is not reactive on a leash but definitely needs more leash training. He will bark at another person if he feels that person is a threat. I've only seen him do that twice, and with good reason each time. With the right training and patience, he will be an amazing companion. We are not sure if he is purebred or a mix, but everything points to a purebred. He is neutered and utd on shots.
