Abby's elderly owners must re-home her as their health issues have necessitated a move to a facility for the elderly. Abby is a curious and loyal 8 year old purebred Lakeland Terrier who has been a good companion for her current owners. She enjoys running and exploring outside, accompanying her human companions while they garden and go about their day, or napping in comfortable spots in the house, including in front of the fireplace on winter evenings. She likes daily walks and will need a fenced-in yard or large secure area for daily exercise. Abby is healthy, vaccinated, spayed, and has had regular veterinary check-ups. Lakeland Terriers are a breed that exhibit intelligence, independence, and a lot of energy. They can be alert for strangers and protective. Abby would do best in a quiet house with adults, without young children or other pets. Abby has not had the opportunity to socialize with other animals, though it is possible that with training and exposure, she could adapt. She tends to be wary of people and animals that she doesn't know. Abby has demonstrated fear and anxiety around strangers who come to the house, resulting in barking, agitation, and the potential for fear-based aggression. She will need training on how to reduce anxiety around people who are not part of the household. Abby has occasionally had accidents in the house. It has worked well to use gates to keep her in certain areas. The current owners recently consulted with a dog trainer prior to listing Abby for re-homing and the trainer thought that the prognosis was good for Abby to adapt to a new home. Training and techniques to help the dog adapt were recommended. The current owners would like to pay for 2 months of training for Abby and her new owner to help lay the foundation for a successful transition. Abby is looking for a home with people who are willing to give her space while she gets familiar with her new family and surroundings, provide outdoor space, and engage with her through training, regular exercise, and enrichment activities. We believe an investment in her training and transition, along with sufficient opportunities to expend her energy, can help her overcome her challenges, bring out her positive characteristics, and give her and her owner a good quality of life. We Would Like to Find for Abby: *Outdoor space to exercise, explore, and release energy *Mental and physical exercise *A warm place to sleep, somewhere to sit and relax in the house *The company of humans * A good diet *Training to make the transition successful and address her fear of strangers *Best in a home w/o small children *Best in a home w/o other animals, has not had exposure to living with other pets. She has gotten along well with 2 small dogs who in the past came to visit with their family member owners. This was infrequent and some time ago. *Best if new owner has experience with dogs, and/or an interest in learning about the Lakeland Terrier breed and how to best work with this dog. Abby can be a good companion for the right person in the right setting. She has been a good companion for her current owners - calm, attentive, and loyal.
