Belgian Malinois mix
Age: Young Adult

We are searching for an experienced, loving, and structured home for Layla to thrive in. The best fit will be with an owner who understands and has the resources for high-drive breeds. Layla's story: I was 19 when a local neighbor brought Layla to the vet I worked in at the time. I initially decided to foster her until we could find a suitable home. But anybody who meets Layla will understand how easy it is to fall in love with her. She is one of the most special, intelligent, and loving dogs that you will ever know. With that being said, when I made the decision to keep her, my life circumstances were drastically different at the time. Due to unexpected health challenges, we do not have the resources to provide her with the environment that she needs. Layla is extremely eager to work, learn, and please. She's an extremely quick learner and knows a broad range of commands, including how to search and find, and even retrieve medications. Her only weakness is leash reactivity. As a very small woman, it's almost impossible to control her on own, so it's difficult to take her for walks. She has never been aggressive - in fact she gets along very well with every human/animal she's been around, including cats. She just likes to bark, pull, and lunge when she's on a leash. Once she's able to greet, she calms down quickly. She will also bark at people she sees while we are in the car. This has been identified as excitement based reactions. Layla has experience in crowded dog parks as well, in fact it's one of her favorite places to go. Although she struggles with leash reactivity, we have worked excessively on impulse control. We use a place mat daily which teaches her patience, discipline, and learning to handle occasional boredom. If she's told to sit or stay in one place, she won't move until she receives her 'break' command. We have also done training sessions for the leash reactivity, but because of financial challenges, we couldn't uphold her sessions. However there was great progress even in the few sessions we've done, so I'm very confident that if somebody had the resources to continue training her, she would absolutely excel. Layla's ideal home would be with somebody who might have a big family (she does great with children), maybe other animals as she loves to play (she is a big herder though!) and enough spare time for a dog that would be happiest with a lot of attention, training, and exercise. We believed she was a Border Collie, but a vet told us Belgian Malinois. She has very similar traits of both. She's the type of dog that enjoys being by your side. Other information about Layla: She is house trained and can stay by herself for the average work day. We believe she is about 4 years old. She is spayed, and up to date on shots and heartworm pills. She has sensitive skin and sometimes gets contact allergy flare ups. We put salmon oil in her dog food, bathe her with oatmeal soap, and occasionally give her antibiotics. This has only been a seasonal issue. She absolutely loves to run, a fenced in backyard would be phenomenal for her. She likes to alert you to sounds, like hearing a loud noise outside. We have tackled this by telling her 'thanks for letting me know, can you bring me your baby?' and she will grab her toy and stop the behavior with a toy in her mouth.
