About Layla

Adoption Fee: $150
Belgian Malinois mix
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

We are urgently searching for a loving home for Layla to thrive in. Layla is an intelligent, loving, and energetic dog who needs an owner that is familiar with high-drive breeds. She was about four months old when my local neighbor brought her to my former vet job as a rescue (she was actually running around my own neighborhood and we couldn't find owners). I decided to foster her but I kind of prolonged the process because I grew a big heart for Layla and struggled to part ways. Unfortunately, my living and health circumstances have changed drastically. I'm limited in work and spend nights away from home, making it very difficult to provide the care, attention, and stimulation that she needs. Layla is trained on extensive commands including search/find, and we have dabbled in some health support training (which she picked up very quickly!) Her main challenge is leash training and emotional excitement, as assessed by a trainer. She pulls/barks when she sees other animals/people.. This is more of a way to say 'I want to say hi so bad that I can't calm down', and has never turned into any aggressive behavior. She made huge progress in leash training in just a few sessions but I couldn't uphold training due to finances. She has experience at dog parks, doggy day care, and other dynamic environments. She gets along with animals (including cats) and children. She's about 4 years, 62 lbs, house-trained (can be left alone for average work day), spayed, and up to date on shots. She loves playing frisbee and going to the lake. She craves mental and physical stimulation. Although she can be energetic, it is well controlled when in a structured environment when her need to serve is fulfilled. We have also done a lot of work on recall training and impulse/boredom control (daily place mat). Layla can be sound sensitive in new environments, meaning she will bark/grumble if she hears an unfamiliar noise. When she hears 'go get your baby,' she will grab a stuffie instead of barking. She truly is an incredible dog and companion, she just has a few little quirks. I believe Layla would absolutely thrive with massive potential in the right environment.
