About Irina

Black Russian Terrier
Age: Senior
Sex: Female

Irina is an AKC registered purebred Black Russian Terrier. She is the shorter of the two in the picture(with the bigger head). She is 10yrs old and not spade, but due to age she should not be breed. She is an escape artist. She can open doorknobs and latched gates. She is also very affectionate. She is also very protective but also extremely loving. She is very protective of her family and always on watch. She follows commands fairly well...and knows a few Russian commands. You will need to be careful when having strangers over as her protection instincts kick in until she knows that the guest is welcome and she is comfortable with them. She will need space to run and is also well behaved in the house. She needs a warm space to sleep at night. Even though the breed tolerates cold well, she had her coat cut down so she still gets cold. She does well at the groomers. She is about 100lbs and very strong. The aggressiveness noted has been toward neighbors they have decided are people their family needs to be protected against. The owner has dementia and is unable to watch them closely enough to keep them from breaking out and going to the neighbors and intimidating them or to properly introduce and train them to be welcoming of the neighbors. About the breed- Black Russian terriers are used to living in apartments in Russian for protection/guard dogs. They do not shed much and are considered hypoallergenic (more like human hair). They are trained in a couple Russian commands (Nyet means no, sidet (sounds like Sid deet) means sit). If protection drive engages they will go after people so introduction need to be careful and intentional until the dog is familiar and comfortable with the new person, then they are great. They are also prone to try to correct small children if they are running around or yelling, ideally the home would only have older children or none at all. They also tend to do well in packs but this can also increase their protection drive. Her son, Sniper, is also up for adoption. We would love for them to be kept together but would also consider separating them. Sniper is an AKC registered purebred Black Russian Terrier. He is the taller of the two. He is 5yrs old and neutered. He is affectionate but a bit pushy about it, lol. He enjoys running, getting pats, and being where the action is. He does have a few hot spots. the vet said it was the food so we switched it and have him wearing collars at times to prevent licking. He can get out of fenced spaces at times. In the right enviroment with more focused training, they are awesome, loving dogs.
