About Sorka

Shiba Inu / Miniature Pinscher
Age: Young Adult
Sex: Female

Sorka's story started a few years ago when she was left behind when her family moved. She ended up running the streets for over 2.5 yrs. Not because people didn't try hard to get her safe. But because she was incredibly agile and determined to stay out of reach. ' When she became at risk for euthanasia at the county shelter because she was so extremely fearful and shut down, we went ahead and pulled her. We knew we had to give her a chance to know a different life. We had been following her story from the start of people not being able to get her safe through an ACO friend who had become very invested in getting her safe. Four days after she arrived here she completely shocked us by 'flipping the switch' as we call it and become very interested in affection and touch by us! Which made it clear that somewhere along the way, she had known a life of affection with her people. As extreme fear dogs rarely 'flip' that fast! ' She likely was never exposed to new people/environments. So when she found herself fending for her life, she chose to do what felt like safety to her, which was to avoid contact with new people at all costs. She has thrived here and we are so happy with how far she has come! She is still what we consider a fearful girl. But if she is comfortable in her environment and knows the people around her, you can't tell that she is a shy girl, easily startled. She is looking for a home with a stable, social dog and humans that can give her time and space to warm up, but who can also continue to gently encourage her to grow her confidence. She is sweet and once bonded with you, wants to always be with you. She loves going for walks and is a great hiking companion candidate . She is a great size for taking on adventures! She does however come with a major warning label'|'| she is every bit as skilled as Houdini. Seriously. She didn't remain free on the streets for 2.5 yrs of people persistently trying to capture her without honing her escape skills. There is no way to over state her skills. Or her persistence. She can climb a six ft chain link fence in 30 seconds or less. She's been known to scale a cinder block wall. Dig out under fences. And twice now she's climbed our six foot storage shelves and dragged stuff off of them. She also can climb one of our trees. Her family needs to have a sense of humor, to enjoy her shenanigans, and the willingness to take the recommended precautions, like keeping her on a long line while she settles in and crate her when she's left home alone. She is so worth all the up front supervision she will require. She's incredibly smart and highly food motivated. She would be super fun to teach new tricks to. And she just has such a happy vibe to her!
