About Blue & Gold Macaw

Adoption Fee: $500.00
Pet Bird
Age: Adult
Sex: Female

Xana has had no medical conditions and has remained healthy with good appetite and activity level all her life. She has never exhibited any maladaptive behaviors like feather plucking, rocking, incessant screaming, hypersexuality (randy bird), hostility, violence, etc. Xana will step on a stick for transfers. Xana will usually step on a finger of a familiar friend. She will sometimes nip an offered finger. Xana's bites rarely draw blood. Often these are mock charges. She knows very few words and commands. She doesn't play much or appear to have a sense of humor. Xana generally bonds to one person, tho tolerates interactions with a variety of familiars. She can be jealous but has never been violent. She has never left her perch to attack someone or flown at someone. She can fly short distances but does so only rarely. She is very content to perch on a shoulder and has never attacked a face. She is quite sociable and curious and is content on my shoulder as I putter around the kitchen preparing food. She is usually quiet and content by herself most of the day. At times, she can be very loud and demanding. Xana will occasionally utter the legendary ear-splitting macaw shriek, but not nearly as often as other members of her genus. With patience she will tolerate, and even enjoy, being preened. She will even snuggle some. Xana cannot be trusted to sit indefinitely by herself on a perch outside of her cage because, if left alone, she may climb down from a perch and explore and she can cause considerable property damage. Generally, she seems under socialized: not especially interactive or outgoing, and doesn't say much, doesn't engage in complex interactions with people, doesn't play, and can't fly well. This may be the result of early years that did not involve enough positive stimulation and social interaction. Her baseline apprehension, unpredictability and apparent mild phobia of hands suggests there may have been abuse. She has a mildly damaged left foot but climbs and walks without handicap. If someone with the right temperament were to devote some quality time to this bird, it is possible that Xana might develop more complex behaviors and become an extraordinary companion.
