Shady is almost 8 years old. He was born 2/10/2017 in Connecticut and was adopted as a puppy. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, and microchipped. He takes Simperica for tick/heartworm prevention every month and has since he was a puppy. During the first 5 years of his life he was well-socialized, leash- and house-trained, good with people and other dogs, but has always been fearful of children. Shady loves to sleep and snuggle, go for hikes, play tug-of-war, wrestle with other dogs, swim, go for rides in the car, and eat. He has never been professionally groomed, but loves taking baths and is very patient with his owner when being shaved or getting a haircut. When Shady was 5 he moved to a remote location and spent most of his time away from other people. During this time he became increasingly more protective of his owner, anxious, and aggressive towards strangers. He will aggressively bark at strangers who approach him or his home, or towards people he sees when riding in the car. When properly introduced to new people, he becomes accustomed and trusting but still has reactive tendencies. Shady has a history of biting. There have been less than 5 incidents in the last 2 years that were all either Level 2 or 3 on Dunbar's Dog Bite Scale. When he is away from his owner he is markedly less anxious and aggressive. Shady's ideal home would be one without children and with a fenced-in yard away from neighbors or in a remote area where he could run off-leash. Shady is looking for a new home and needs a new owner that understands his triggers, has experience with reactive, large breed dogs, and can provide a safe and loving environment for him.
