Courtesy Posting: LOS ANGELES, CA- EMERGENCY NEW HOME OR FOSTER NEEDED FOR YOUNG, FRIENDLY SIMBA, GOOD W KIDS AND MOST DOGS. THIS SWEETIE HAS SPECIAL NEEDS W DISCOID LUPUS (causes ulcerations on his mouth and nose) WHICH CAN BE MANAGED WITH MEDS (and we have some sponsorship for), at risk to be euthanized soon as owner could not afford care and left him. Who can adopt, foster or help? Help! We are in immediate need of a home or foster and placement for Simba after his owner brought him to a vet requesting euthanasia because they said they could no longer afford his care, and were moving, and sadly just did, leaving Simba behind. The caring vet refused to just euthanize him without trying to find him a forever home he so deserves. She said Simba is, 'Hands down the sweetest Chow I have ever met. He is two years old and in need of a new forever home. He is a very sweet boy who was diagnosed with discoid lupus erythematosus in July of this year. This is a hereditary autoimmune disease that causes ulceration of his mouth and nose. When under consistent treatment to suppress the inappropriate immune response (Atopica, cyclosporine) his symptoms seem to be well-managed. Owner reports he is good with other dogs and loves people, including kids. He has always been good natured with our human team members as well, even when painful or stressful veterinary procedures are being performed.' We have nice video of Simba interacting with other dogs from this former owner who also told us he was 'amazing' with other dogs. In an effort to avoid euthanasia, we found and placed him in a very temporary foster home with 5 other dogs of both sexes and various sizes he gets along with for the past few weeks. But this temporary foster can only hold him another week or less- and then he may sadly be euthanized if no placement can be found. Simba was originally adopted as a young puppy from a pet store in Florida and has been an indoor dog ever since. He is now 2 %BE years old and has no reported bites, and is potty trained, even the temp foster said he has never had an accident. We also have found less costly treatments available, and the vet has kindly offered to assist with initial medication. However, Simba will need daily medication for the remainder of his life. He is fully vaccinated, and neutered already, and if you are local, the vet offered a free exam in his first year. The vet is happy to also speak to any serious party about his future care. While Simba has done well with most dogs we are aware of, if you have another dog, a meet and greet is always recommended, along with proper introductions and precautions. The temp foster told us she noticed a little food resource guarding and Simba giving a warning to her small dog to back off when she was too much in his personal space. However, he loves to play with other male chow in the home, as both dogs are very playful with one another. This may be why another person who watched Simba for a day thought said he did not do well with her very large dog, saying he jumped on her for no reason. He may just have wanted to play. We have video of Simba playing with another male chow so you can see this. For those with cats, Simba has not lived with cats and while he seemed okay walking past cats at the vet, he did seem a bit more focused on a cat he saw outside. If you may be interested to adopt, foster or help Simba in any way, please contact [email protected] asap or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to help find him placement so he is not euthanized. We will post additional pictures and videos on his original Facebook post at: https://www.facebook.com/783968124/posts/10166615298703125/?mibextid=wwXIfr While we realize this situation is very upsetting, please no negative comments as this does not help Simba. Just please share his story to help find him a home. Note: to view the videos and other photos of him on his Facebook page, you will need to copy and paste the link into your browser.
