About Ichabod

Adoption Fee: $200
Siberian Husky / German Shepherd
Age: Adult
Sex: Male

Ichabod is a very sweet, shy male husky/shepherd/malamute mix in good health. He's six years old (DOB 10/16/2018), neutered and microchipped. He loves walks, hikes, the Oregon coast, and long naps on the couch. While he's nervous around strangers, he's obsessed with belly rubs and leg-presses with humans he knows. He is deeply compassionate and can pick up on people who are sad or in pain and will tend to them. Because of his own rescue history (we adopted him as a puppy after he was rescued from a bad puppy mill situation), he will always be shy around strangers, but is a great pet for adults or children over 10. We are having to rehome him as he is not compatible with our toddler. Why Ichabod is awesome: He is house-broken. He can take a walk on moderately-busy streets and can go into quiet, dog-friendly stores just fine (such as the book store, the post office, or our local grocer). Although he can be a little stubborn, he does answer to commands, even in stressful situations, and has good recall. He can be left alone for several hours at a time, but does better with being alone if he's had regular exercise. He does very well playing or walking 1:1 with female dogs or very submissive, neutered male dogs. He loves small pack walks and play time with 1-2 other dogs. He loves walks. He is not especially leash-aggressive. However, we will usually cross the street when we come across another dog, as periodically he will react to reactive dogs or dogs that stare at him too long. He is used to having a backyard, but as he's gotten older, doesn't need to be out there for long periods. He would do all right with a small yard or a home with no yard, so long as he could have regular walks. How Ichabod needs support: He does not like strangers to pet him and he does not do well in crowds of people (so no festivals or parades) and gets anxious sitting in outdoor cafe settings. If he's left alone and hasn't had a walk in a day or two, he'll sometimes get into mischief. The mischief usually involves chewing up mail, books, or getting into the cat's food. He gets antsy around guests in the house and may bark or nip at them, so we often separate him from guests with a gate. If the guest stays a few days, he will generally settle down and accept them. He does not do well crated and does not do well in large groups of dogs. While he's not a big escape artist, he has tried to dig under our fence a few times. Overall, Ichabod would be best suited in a home without small children. We think he would love living with another dog, preferably female or a low-key, submissive male, but he is used to being a solo-dog as well.
