Greetings and happy holidays, I'm writing as a dog parent looking to rehome my 3.5 year old, 11lbs chihuahua mix. My dog, Chuco, has been with me 3 years and unfortunately in 2024 he was diagnosed with IVDD (Intervertebral Disk Disease) when he sustained a spinal injury that led to emergency surgery as well as care and many vet bills that I'm no longer able to afford. Both Chuco and I have done an amazing job with his recovery considering the limited resources we have had to carry it through, but unfortunately it is no longer sustainable. I have researched rehoming services and submitted his information but we have had no luck. In addition to looking at rehoming resources, I'm also looking for shelters that might be able/willing to work with me being his 'foster parent' so that I don't have to surrender him to a shelter while actively looking for a loving and financially stable person/family to adopt him. The ideal person/family/environment for Chuco would be a financially stable, one with easy and safe access to nature like a contained backyard; people who have experience training/keeping pups safe and easy going. His happy place is nature. My home life is very lowkey but maybe a busier environment might be nice. If/when he's indoors, getting trained to not jump on furniture, go up and down stairs and use ramps instead, would be best to prevent future injuries. He has had no behavioral issues with the exception of getting nervous around some dogs, strange or overly enthusiastic people and little kids. He will bark at them but has never shown any impulse to bite any dog or person. He's very chill for a chihuahua or what most people expect from them. I can take him just about anywhere, including work and he will do well as long as he feels safe. I couldn't ask for a better behaved dog to be honest. Although he is back to walking, Chuco's recovery is ongoing. He began having allergies in the summer of 2024 that had him itching throughout his body and as a result he reinjured himself but had a quicker recover from that. He's young, strong and energetic, and I have all the faith that he will have a beautiful and healthy life with the right care and family.
