PETEY Breed: Dachshund Color: Longhaired Double Dapple Age: 9 years old Gender: Male Size: 15 pounds House trained: Yes Good with kids: Older, dog-savvy kids Good with dogs: Yes Good with cats: No Concerns: Blind BIOGRAPHY MEET Petey!! Petey is a former Sophia's Grace Foundation alumni. He was originally found as a stray in Yellow Springs, OH and was taken to a local shelter. Petey was originally set to be euthanized due to his blindness. SGF stepped up after being contacted by another rescue. Petey was adopted by his foster Mom and has been in his current home for 7 yrs. Petey is dog friendly as along as he has time to get familiar with their scents for a period of time and slow introductions due to his blindness. Petey is not cat friendly. Petey is good around respectful children but advised against smaller children. Petey loves his blue Kong (he has 3) that he carries around and plays with in the house and will take outside too. Petey also has a stuffed fox and dog that he is very fond of that he carries with him inside and outside. Petey currently lives in a house with a fenced in yard. He would love to have that again because it makes him feel secure, however he would do fine with just walks. Petey is leash trained and has mapped out his neighborhood and local walking trail. Petey has been trained to go up and down the 2 small steps to go outside of his home. This took a while, but he does it like a champion. Petey has a big crate where he stays when his Mom is away at work. He also sleeps there at night. Petey will often go into his crate on his own as it is his safe space. He also likes to hang out under the desk in the living room. Petey has a favorite bed and he tucks himself into sleep at night. Petey does like to bark as is typical of his breed. He does have some separation anxiety when left alone. Petey was sharing the crate with the other dog in the home, but this had to be stopped due to some arguments. Petey does get a calming treat prior to bedtime, and he also has a plug in to help with his separation anxiety. Petey likes to listen to music at night and during the day when his Mom is gone. Petey would do best in a home with another dog with the understanding that introductions would need to be done slowly and supervised at first. Petey has a small crate with the door always open in which he is fed. This started when he first arrived, and Mom was fostering lots of dogs. We have continued and he knows where to go to be fed. Petey loves treats and gets them when Mom leaves. He also loves to eat blueberries, bananas, apples, strawberries and carrots. He does know the word 'crate' and will go there on command. Petey has been blind since birth, but it has not stopped his explorations or decreased his quality of life in the least. He enjoys all of the things that a dog with all of their senses has with just some accommodations to make him safe. Petey is housetrained however he does sometimes like to mark or poop inside (when it is raining). He would probably do well if he was trained to ring a bell at the door. He will go to the door and turn in circles when he needs to go outside. If Mom doesn't see him that is when he has an accident. He has definitely improved in this area but just understand that this may happen. Petey does have some belly bands that he wears at times, but he also knows how to get them off. Petey is being rehomed due to financial hardship and due to his increased separation anxiety over the past year. Petey would not be a candidate for someone that lives in an apartment due to the barking. He would do best in a home with another dog and with someone that is home more often than not. It would be a huge bonus if Petey would be allowed to sleep up in the big bed with his person at night! Petey is fully vaccinated and heartworm negative. He will have a dental and any necessary extractions on January 6th. He is currently located in Cincinnati, OH, and his adoption fee is $350.00. Adoption application may be found at the following website: www.sophiasgracefoundation.org
