As hard as we've tried, we have been unsuccessful in our attempts at incorporating our lovely rescue Lydia with our smaller senior dogs after six months of trying. Lydia is a loving 'people' dog, extremely playful and silly, and doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body, but is very reactive. Leash walking is difficult, as she is eager to meet any other animal or person who crosses her path. She is not food driven, so training with treats has been less than effective, but she does know basic commands like 'sit' and 'stay.' She is not a 'barker', but is unaware of her size (she's 80 lbs), and would do better with a family that has a medium to large male dog (she is competitive with our small female who is not spayed, but I'm not sure how she'd be with a fixed female). She and our cat are not fond of each other, so a cat-free environment would probably be best. We have not seen blatant resource-guarding, but some initial caution would probably be recommended, as we've had to keep the animals separated, and do not have them share toys. This is the main reason we are trying to find the right place for 'Lyds', we feel that she should have freedom to roam at all times to be around her 'people', and hopefully have a doggy playmate that could match her energy. Lyds' favorite games are 'keep away' and 'chase', so we would love for her to be with a family that has the time and desire to keep up with her. We love this dog with all of our hearts, but feel we are not giving her the life she deserves. We are waiving an adoption fee in lieu of a donation to this wonderful organization.
