Courtesy Posting: X URGENT AT BALDWIN PARK, CA (SO CAL) ID #A5614634 LOS ANGELES COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES- 'TERRY' is RESCUE ONLY - NEEDS FOSTER TOO - , A 53 LB MALE RED CHOW, EST TO BE 3 YRS OLD- BROUGHT TO THE SHELTER, WILL BE ON DEADLINE SOON FOR COMMIT. He is RESCUE ONLY for BEING a bit SCARED but allows handling and did fine with other dogs. However, he cannot be adopted from the shelter directly, and WE NEED A CHOW SAVVY FOSTER, FOSTER TO ADOPT AND OR A RESCUE TO SAVE HIM. Emergency- soon to be euthanized, shelter sent first notice 12-22! We are in urgent need of finding a foster and rescue for this handsome male chow who was surrendered by his owner due to no fault of the dog but the owner had issues. He arrived with his body shaved, but has no reported medical issues. Like many chows, Terry is a bit shy and tense with new people and thus was unfortunately made Rescue only. This shelter euthanized the last young chow also Rescue Only for fear as the shelter will not give long due to being so full. Shelter notes from his behavior assessment state, 'Terry was standing in the middle of the kennel with a tense body, erect ears, neutral gaze, and a tucked tail. He barked defensively, but stopped when the runner spoke softly to him. He would not approach the front of the kennel, and ran to the back when the runner opened the kennel door. The runner gently tossed the leash over his head, and he exited the kennel on his own. He pulled strongly on leash while keeping his distance from the kennels. He ran to the grass to relieve himself as soon as he exited the building. After relieving himself, his body relaxed, his eyes softened, and his mouth opened with a soft pant. He walked ahead of the runner with a high wag, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his body was neutral, his eyes were neutral, his mouth was closed, his ears were erect, and his tail was high. He entered the yard, and exchanged appropriate greetings with the other dogs. He roamed the yard with a neutral body, soft eyes, an open pant, and a high tail with a soft wag. He engaged in play with the other dogs. He growled at the handler whenever she approached him. He began to mount the other dogs, and was difficult to steer. Terry is tolerant of the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a gentle/dainty playstyle.' His handling assessment further states, 'Terry was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was moved to the side yard, and given some time to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He was avoidant of the handler, and growled softly when she approached him. The handler used the leash to gently restrain him. His body was tense with wide eyes and a heavy pant. He allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, and back with no issues. The handler was able to check his ears and teeth with ease. His body tensed further when the handler touched his feet and tail. When the handler touched his sides and abdomen, he growled, whipped his head toward the handler, and stared at her with wide, concerned eyes. He did not try to bite, and allowed the handler to continue petting his head, neck, and back when the assessment was over.' We feel Terry will thrive once out of a scary shelter environment. The shelter made him Rescue Only and now he can only be pulled by a Rescue Partner.
