Jumanji A729987 10 Month Old Male Boxer Pit Bull Terrier Mix Needs Rescue By 12/04/2024 Jumanji is a 10 month old Boxer Pit Bull mix that entered the shelter as a stray on 10/11/24, Jumanji arrived with no concerning behavior and presented himself as a routine energetic young adolescent puppy allowing full handling with staff & volunteers. Jumanji continued to show acceptable behavior through his 3 week assessment check up on 10/30/24, during that time he was being treated for upper respiratory infection which began following neuter surgery on 10/21/24. Shortly after Jumanji's upper respiratory infection being cleared on 11/10/24, it was reported of an abrupt change in behavior on walks. On evaluation Jumanji displayed severe handling concerns related to overarousal and generalized leash reactivity/frustration, on kennel exit Jumanji began mouthing and attempting to bite shoes when at rest, as well as jumping towards handler attempting to bite at leash/hands/arms. Jumanji's behavior has declined and become unsafe to handle at times out of kennel, he will become overstimulated very quickly with little body language fluctuation signs/warnings. Jumanji has had no issues with handling prior to recent episodes after being cleared from upper respiratory infection and moved from inner/half-portion kennel to full-size kennel next to bathroom hallway (narrower sized kennel with known high stress impact). On 3 recent behavior progress assessments out of kennel Jumanji will become overstimulated, attempting to muzzle punch and bite at shoes, if not abruptly stopped and corrected dog has displayed belligerent behavior jumping and trying to bite hands/legs/torso with little warning. If overstimulus observed in timely manner, Jumanji responds well to physical touch/holding and quickly calms down with soft & slow petting / firm hand placement on neck/torso/abdomen. On date of impound I personally assisted with Jumanji's initial intake due to staffing shortages, he presented himself as energetic, very receptive, and easy to handle. Jumanji's original kennel location required handlers to navigate with dog through a building, and he would routinely be carried out of kennel through the building to outdoor area due to dogs enjoyment of being held and lower stress impact on dogs/kennels in passing. Prior to recent behavior concerns, his primary character flaw was being very rough in play and incessantly 'humpy' towards other dogs in dog evaluations and playgroups. At this time Jumanji's behavior deterioration displays concern for overall poor quality of life and safety concerns with staff and volunteers, Long Beach Animal Care Services is seeking rescue placement no later than Wednesday December 4th 2024.
