SEE VIDEOS WE HAVE OF HIM. X URGENT -SHELTER ALREADY ASKING FOR RESCUE 11/14 AND HE WILL NOT GET LONG AT THIS SMALL, REMOTE KILL SHELTER- NEEDS A CHOW SAVVY FOSTER AND RESCUE TO SAVE- INITIALLY SCARED BUT IS ALREADY TAKING TREATS GENTLY AND ALLOWING PETTING, PRIOR OWNER SAYS FRIENDLY- NOW AT RISK TO BE EUTHANIZED SOON. We are in urgent need of finding a chow savvy foster and rescue for this poor purebred boy who had to be shaved completely because he was said to be heavily matted. The shelter asked for a rescue to reply by 11/20. Despite him being fearful in the shelter, Owner surrender notes we can provide specifically state the dog is 'calm, good on leash, playful, friendly. He is a good boy'. He is said to be 5 years young, weighs 52 lbs and has no known medical issues, and is already neutered. Additional notes state he is housebroken, and lived with cat, although was overly playful. He also spent about 8 hours a day alone and possibly outside. With other dogs, they said he is dog selective and prefers dogs who are submissive. Additional notes state he walks well on a leash, has no food aggression, no prey drive, and even let a disabled child pull his hair who lived with him. He also has NO reported bites. They did also state he barks for attention, can be territorial, and likes teen kids who are respectful and goes slow with him. Again, we can provide copies of these notes we were given upon request. Despite all of this, however, the shelter feels he is a bite risk because he is head shy with them, and vet records recommended the owner seek training due to behavior and said there is no record of training. However, interview notes we were given actually state the dog did have some training, although we do not know the extent. Regardless, the shelter said, 'We would appreciate any assistance you can offer in finding an appropriate placement for Mushu, as time is of the essence. Currently, we're unable to handle Mushu directly for safety reasons, as he reacts strongly to overhead movements (slipping a leash over his head), which limits our ability to interact with him. And given how badly matted he was when he arrived, I wonder how well even the owner could really handle him. Our understanding was that he was left home alone for long hours during the day and sometimes overnight as well, so not much socializing was happening the last few months. Here is a link to a video of one staff person that has been able to get Mushu to eat out of her hand. He is growling and grumbling the whole time.' https://share.icloud.com/photos/0bdSpcV0rWv-euoz_v2mcd6rA We have since sent a volunteer 11/16 and 11/17 who found Mushu to warm up slowly, and basically being a typical chow in the shelter environment. She did notice he was more afraid of her husband though, despite living with men before. The volunteer provided several videos of him which we will post on facebook, one showing she was able to go in his kennel, where he showed no aggression, and later was able to pet him, and he eventually fell asleep with her in his kennel. Despite this, the shelter would not allow her yet to attempt to leash him however. It may be this shelter has little to no experience with chows and or does not understand much of his behavior is typical. However, we do recommend anyone interacting with him go slow, as he may indeed be head shy with new people as can be common with chows. We are therefore desperately looking for a chow savvy foster and rescue to save Mushu in time. If you are interested in fostering, fostering to adopt, or helping (ie., visiting him, pledging for his rescue, transport, etc), please contact [email protected] or Southern California Chow Chow Rescue Network who is trying to find placement asap, and can try to pair fosters or interested parties with a willing rescue group. Rescue groups may contact the shelter directly by calling 707-584-3057 (Mickey) or (707) 584-2689 (Taylor) and providing his name, as well as emailing the rescue coordinators at [email protected] and [email protected].
